Front and rear side light not working

Featured Replies

Hey all

Not really sure what to be looking for here and looking a bit of help

My side lights aren't working correctly on one side (right side) when I switch them on they come on for around a second then turn off again (left hand side stays on)

If it comes on I would imagine the bulb is OK?

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like some kind of loose connection. Very easy to diagnose, you have one confirmed working sidelight, swap it over to the 'broken' side and observe what happens...

Ok will give it a go when home from work, thank you.

The front parking lights (formally known as sidelights) and rear tail lights are controlled and protected by the Body Control Module (BCM) and don't have any fuse protection.

The BCM monitors the current to the lamps in each circuit and if it detects excess current draw it will switch that circuit off. It will restore power on the next key cycle to check to see if the fault has gone, but if there is still a problem it will once again turn off the circuit.

There are a few possibilities.

  • Have you recently replaced the lamps with a different type or higher Wattage ? Try removing either just the front or rear lamp and see if the other remains on.
  • You may have a faulty lamp holder which is causing a partial short-circuit leading to excess current been taken by the circuit. Check for signs of corrosion of the fitting.
  • It could be that the BCM itself is faulty, usually caused by water ingress in to the connectors.

Didn't even need to, turned the rear bulb around, put it back in and now both working correctly. Fingers crossed it stays that way. Thank you.
