Bike carbs hitting alternator on 1.4

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I started fitting my bike carbs last weekend on the 1.4. All was going swimmingly until i came to actually pop the carbs onto the manifold and the carbs hit the alternator...Boooo..

I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and if so how did you get around it. I believe the SE Duratec is the same engine as the 1.6 Zetec used in Fiesta's and the 1.7 in the Puma.

The kit i used was the DanST kit and everything seems to fit pretty well, so far its just the alternator which in a fairly big stumbling block.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like you'll need an alternator relocation kit to move it downwards.  If you're removing the AC compressor, that's the ideal place to fit it.

If it's only just touching, you can grind a little off of the alternator housing without compromising it.

Thanks Fella.

The aircon has already been removed, however annoyingly the compressor is still there, i hoped the non aircon models were the same but just with a shorter belt, after a bit of research it seems they arent and the consensus seems to be that people just remove the guts from the compressor leaving the pulley. So relocation there may be a bit of a problem.

Do you know if alternator relocation kits are available for the 1.4?

Thanks

I don't unfortunately.

The reason you can't just remove the AC compressor on these is because the belt run would then foul the waterpump pulley between the crank and alternator.  But if you can move the alternator down to the original compressor position.  And then fit a small bracket with a simple idler pulley roughly at the same height of the original alternator pulley, that should get around that issue.  I don't know if anyone makes a kit for that though, and I haven't found one from a quick online search.

Cool, thanks fella.

I'll do some investigation

Much appreciated.

Looks like it has a 90a alternator on it.

Does anyone know if the 70a alternator is either any shorter in length or thinner? Its not hitting by much and as the Aircon and fuel injection etc has gone 70a will probably be plenty.

Can't answer the question I'm afraid but fascinated to see how this goes. This sort of thing has been  off my radar since the days of when I dreamed of an 8 port head and amal carbs on my minis!😀

Once this is sorted the next problem is converting to a bike fuel pump.

I’ve got the pump and I think it will plug straight into the Nodiz, however the existing pump is in the tank (annoyingly) and has a return pipe that the carbs don’t need.
so I guess either dropping the tank or cutting a hole and making as inspection cover in the floor under where the back seat once lived so I can remove the existing pump, blank off the return and send the existing pipe to the bike pump somehow.

I could use a Malpassi fuel reg which drops EFI pressure down to about 2psi for the carbs but I’ve heard they are unreliable.
