Hi,

I'm after replacing 4 spark plugs in my 2004 1.25 Fiesta. After replacing them, the car cranks but will not start, also cranks strangely like it has no compression.

Are you sure they're tight enough?

Leads don't always pop back on first time with these, but they wouldn't change the compression.

Yes, the plugs are nicely tightened, there wouldnt be any air getting through. Im beginning to think my engine is flooded somehow...

 

 

Pull one of the plugs and have a look.  If it's flooded, they'll be wet.

Again, that wouldn't reduce the compression though.  You'd have to be very unlucky for the cambelt to have snapped immediately after replacing plugs.  Is the engine definitely turning over?  Not just the starter spinning without engaging?

Ive sorted it. Turns out the engine flooded so disconnected the 4 injectors (electrical connectors) and spun it over a few times around 8 secs each time. Then reconnected and it started right up. Whats strange is that when the engine is flooded, it does sound like another problem such as a head gasket gone, or anything else affecting compression. Engine spins over very fast. Hope this helps someone. Another thing that you can do is take the top 3 bolts off the upper timing cover and view the belt and make sure it turns while cranking. For future reference and to help anyone reading this, most cars are programmed so that if they are flooded you floor the Accelerator and keep it there. Then attempt to start the car in no more than 10 second bursts.

The PCM should recognise this as an attempt to start a flooded engine and cut the fuel until the car attempts to start. There should be an instruction in most owners handbooks to confirm this.

Yeah, from what I know when Fuel Injection first became commonplace starting flooded engines were a problem so the electronics were programmed to recognise the floored Accelerator as an attempt to clear flooding and the fuel was cut.

Our cars with a Push Button start are slightly different according to the Handbook. You normally only have to touch the Button once and everything else is done for you and I think it is the same with a floored Accelerator to start a flooded engine.
