Handbrake auto-release - can I stop it?

Featured Replies

I'm finding the auto-release of the electric handbrake a nuisance at the best of times.

Any way of disabling it so I have complete control over the thing? Auto-hold is off, though I don't think that has anything to do with it!

2020 Focus ST-Line ecoblue is the car, though I would think all Ford electric parking brakes behave similarly!

Thanks - Richard

The short answer is no.

The EPB does not operate like a traditional handbrake, it is either fully on, or fully off. There is no means to gradually release the parking brake and therefore the car has to immediately fully release the brakes as soon as it senses that you are about to try and move off.

Personally I've had cars with EPB since 2010 and never had any issues although all my cars were/are automatic and so I don't use the parking brake very often.
