Removing Fiesta Mk7.5 headlights!

Featured Replies

I know this must be an old topic but I'm unable to find it.

I bought some uprated dipped headlight bulbs from Halfords and politely declined the offer to have them fitted.  I thought, oh no, an old hand like me  can cope with a simple job like that having looked in the Ford handbook where it says just two screws to remove.

Firstly, there are actually three fixings to be removed, not two, the third being one of those infernal plastic screw clips (not mentioned in the handbook)where the screw invariably won't come out and the clip has to be forceably prised out, usually breaking it as I did.  Then the headlight unit resists coming away despite a lot of jiggling. How can Ford make what should be a 5 minute job as changing a bulb so complicated?

I have watched several 'How To' videos on that popular channel and every time they gloss over actually pulling the unit out.  One chap, I noticed actually bent the steelwork to extract the headlight unit.  In complete contrast, on  my sons Mondeo several years ago,  no tools were needed to removethe headlight.  Two clips operated and it was out.  I've never come across a better design.  Why couldn't Ford carry this idea forward?  Is the Mk 8 any better?

So, my question is,  how much brute force should I apply without breaking something? Is there a special knack ?   I know there is a retaining clip underneath. Any advice appreciated.  Some videos show a lot more of the dreaded clips removed to give 'elbow room'.   Otherwise I will have to go back to Halfords in shame and say I can't do it.

Broken headlamp brackets have been a bit of an issue on Mk 8s, so probably not.

From memory (and it’s been years) it needs a decent amount of force but not super strength.  IIRC it’s one big chunky clip - perhaps the YouTube videos can give you an idea of where to exert your energy.

Be prepared for half of your front end to disappear - you appreciate how big those lights are when you remove them!
