Oil advice.

Featured Replies

After all the posts relating to using the recommended oil which seems to be Castrol magnatec 5w-20 , I decided to take a trip to my local Ford Main Dealer and bought a Ford oem oil filter and 5 litres of the recommended Ford oil. To my surprise I was given Ultratec pro-tec eco 5w -20. I assume this is correct as its from the main Ford dealers and it does match the required specifications WSS-M2C948-B Fully Synthetic as per my manual. This has to be good to use would you agree,  I'm getting a bit paranoid reading all these ecoboost posts.

Thanks

Hmm.  This seems to be Arnold Clark's own brand.  So presumably what AC dealers would use if you had an oil change done there.

Not sure I'd feel 100% comfortable with it myself, but it does match the OE spec so should be fine.

Yes it is a Arnold Clarke garage, the parts shop is Autoparts .So I agree its their own brand,  but if I was taken my car there for a service you can guarantee that's what they would use , and probably in my car already.

This is the oil given by my Ford Dealer?

Fundamentally if it is being sold by a franchise dealer who also sort warranty claims should ecoboost engines go wrong then it should be fine. Plus, the spec (WSS-M2C148-B) is clearly marked on it so for that reason, it is safe to use.

I use the Castrol stuff, purely because it is mentioned in the manual and I'm a sucker for the 'developed with Ford' marketing.

Yes, if it complies with the spec is should be fine. Just looked back through 5 years worth of Ford dealer invoices for my old 1.0 and they actually used Total branded oil, though they gave me a complimentary litre bottle when I collected my current car and that's Castrol branded.

Thanks for confirming,  I was just taken back when they produced this oil after reading so many posts on Castrol. On another note life was so much easier when I had my 14 year old vw, off to the nearest euro car or similar shop and got the cheapest filters, oil,  parts without a worry 🤣

Which VW was that?  My 2002 Golf PD engine ate it's own camshaft.

Presumably due to the full VW service history using long life oil that it was prescribed at the time.

I think those PD engines were pretty hard on the camshafts, particularly if the camshaft themselves were a bit soft**. Loved the "hit" when the torque kicked in, though.

(**I had a couple of GM "Family 2" engines do the same in the 80s. Story at the time was a faulty batch made from metal softer than chocolate but both replaced foc (GM goodwill back then seemed better than we see from Ford nowadays!😀)

I had 2009 golf 1.4 tsi, a good car really. I never had any bother with it , I just thought it was getting a little to old and thought I'd get something newer and a change, I didn't know then what I was letting myself in for thou 🤣
