Crazy good fuel economy 2005 1.4 Fiesta

Featured Replies

Thought economy had took a tumble after wishbone changes due to alignment so had it done and done a 59 mile drive mostly 70mph with roundabout on A roads and 5 miles local roads after the bulk of the journey. Done a full fill and reset trip meter done the journey and used the same pump to fill back up. Calculate FE 83mpg! Seems far to good but was taking it very easy with hardly any braking and costing to lights so never came to a stop. I don't believe it was under 4l to fill fully back up with the nozzle clicking off multiple times. Maybe had air pocket in tank but still must be decent economy as bar graph didn't move on dash from full segments.

That's pretty good going, what engine?

I have just changed from an 1.0l 125PS Mhev Ecoboost Fiesta to a 1.5l 200PS Ecoboost Fiesta ST-3.  I was getting a over 60mpg in the 125 (brim-to-brim method) which I thought was excellent for a petrol engine.  I have recently done the first brim-to-brim mpg check in the ST and as expected getting a much lower 46-47mpg.

I would just keep doing mpg checks on each fill up, this will give you a better idea of your mpg based on your usual day-to-day journeys.

I'm envious.  In 14 years of new or nearly new Fiesta ownership (3 cars 2XMk7 and 1XMk7.5), these are the best calculated average figures I have attained:

New 09 plate Mk7 1.6 Diesel manual  -  60mpg

Nearly new 59 plate Mk7 1.4 petrol Auto - 41mpg

Used 14 plate Mk7.5 1.0 Ecoboost Auto (DSG)- 48mpg

The big factors here are a) that I do mostly very short journeys where the engine hardly warms up and b) two of them are automatics..  Thse are summer figures, winter ones slightly worse (in the case of the 1.4 auto, much worse) which makes sense.  I  drive as light-footed as possible and generally cruise at 60 and rarely go over 70 on the motorway (honest)..

Ouch! My son recently bought an '08 mk6 1.4 Fiesta Ghia manual, and I've driven it most, (he's not passed his test) all town driving and am getting (according to trip computer) 29 mpg.

The OP's car is either 1.4 TDCI or the calculations are off.  No-one has ever got more than 45mpg from the 1.4 petrol.

My own experience of averages:

2002 Fiesta 1.4 petrol LX - 42mpg

2008 Fiesta 2.0 ST - 33mpg

2008 Focus 1.6 TDCi 16v - 55mpg

2012 Focus 1.6 TDCi 8v - 60mpg

2021 Focus 1.0 155 MHEV - 45mpg

We were warned off the 1.4 petrol by various dealers on grounds of poor economy/little performance benefit versus the 1.25.

A bit off the topic, but as it's been mentioned, I've had a whisker under 50 from mine also (measured brim to brim), generally get low to mid 40's, though a spell of supermarket runs etc soon sees it dive into the high 30's. I doubt anyone buys an ST for fuel economy, but still quite impressive in that regard, nonetheless.

i have a 1.4 tdci 2007 fiesta that i was using for delivery work for a long time almost all local driving, started to keep a record of milage/fuel at 149380 miles its now done 172938 miles and over that time it has had a steady average MPG of 57 to 60. servicing kept up (by myself not in a garage) and car for the most part looked after and driven tidy not flooring it everywhere like a boy racer.

now im using a 2009 1.5tdci fiesta van and its averaging around 54 MPG doing the same work.

i have a spreadsheet in excel that works everything out for me 🙂 if anyone would like a copy of it feel free to send me a direct message as i cant post excel files on the forum.

i've added a screen shot showing what it looks like filled out.

This is a 1.4 petrol 2005 model. 59 miles travelled and 3.23 litre to rebrim the tank.

Physically impossible for a 1.4 petrol to do that MPG I'm afraid.

Conventional petrols run close to stoich all the time so there is a maximum for the cylinder capacity.  (Unlike diesels which can run lean for much of the time.)

Looks like the fuel pump cut off early as you suggested.

I think a check over a longer run and larger fill-up would be a better, would give a much more realistic measurement.  I tend to run the tank down to around 50-75miles range left and then fill-up to brim, then do the calculation.

I was expecting a bigger drop in mpg....if I can keep it in the 40's I will be happy with that but having too much fun might put paid to that 😉.....

Fellers.... you're not helping 😞

I have something similar - four cars, graphs, overall mpg, tank mpg, costs per mile, forecast miles per annum, annual fuel costs, parts costs, bills, tax, insurance, etc..  Boy, I'm a right nerd !!!  Started keeping mpg figures in the 70's when I regularly drove from, Chatham Kent to Helensburgh on the Clyde.

Best consumption we ever got was a 2006 1.4TDCI  Fiesta, driving around Snowdonia ( I don't know how to spell it's Welsh name!) 72mpg, diesel on load up hill very efficient, and going downhill, did not use any fuel !

Worst MPG was probably my first 2.8 Capri, but I was young and hot headed then, now I'm just hot headed !

(Excel is the most useful thing on a PC, but if someone states that they know how to use it, I always ask, "What is the longest nested "IF" they have ever written?" !!!!!)

I don't do this but was planning something similar.  Write mind down in a book...must make me a lesser nerd 😂
