Brake master cylinder replacement 2005 connect with ABS

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm hoping that somebody can help me please.

The brake master cylinder of my '2005 connect 1.8 TDCI 90ps with ABS' is failing/failed and I'm really really struggling to find a replacement.

No spare parts dealers near me can stock them and the internet seems to be drawing a blank.  My unit has a small reservoir fitted, fed from a larger reservoir and has two outputs on the offside which are threaded M12x1 (not M10x1)  The internet (ebay etc) seems to show only 1 offering of something similar but with M10x1 outlets.  I don't have a good picture of my unit but I've attached a picture from the internet instead.

Question please - Does anybody know where I might source a replacement?

Best wishes, Tony.

Either buy the service and repair kit for it, or send it to one of the many companies who refurbish them. Just do an online search for "brake master cylinder repair"

Hello all,

Unofix - Thanks for your quick reply and suggestion.  Unfortunately I'm still finding that nobody has a repair kit or can overhaul my master cylinder.

I'm baffled why a repair kit, or replacement master cylinder is seemingly unavailable.  Any recommendations from anybody would be much appreciated.

Best regards, Tony.

Hi Unofix,

Thank you for your troubles.  My response here is kinda directed at all connect owners who might end up with the same problem as me.

I have seen that part that you've suggested, 5040319, offered by different suppliers and some are selling it as LPR6343.  Strangely most are listing it as their last one in stock, a marketing ploy maybe.  Some sellers say it's for connects without ABS and some say it's for ALL connects from 2002 to 2013, but the vast majority of sellers simply don't respond to my enquiries and there's no phone numbers that I can try instead.  My van definitely has ABS and my master cylinder looks very similar to the picture below which is ALSO listed by some sellers as 5040319, again some say for use with ABS, some sellers say for use without.  My existing master cylinder has cast bosses for two nearside ports that haven't been machined but the offside bosses have been machined M12x1 (I think? certainly not M10x1 though).

I found something that looks the same as what you've suggested from shop.ford.co.uk, also listed as 5040319 but being sold at £342.  I even went to my local main ford dealer for confirmation, and they confirmed that the part number I need for my registration is 5040319, but when I said that it looks very different to my unit they just kinda gave me a blank look, not what I expected after being quoted £480.  I asked if they were sure it was the right part and would work with ABS? they said that they didn't know, despite them also saying that it's for all connects from 2002 to 2013.  I asked if it was possible that the master cylinders have since been standardised across all models (2002 to 2013) to take a unit looking like your suggested 5040319, but they were incredibly non-committal.  I felt like I'd walked into a shop selling anything but Ford parts.  Just to note that although my van is 2005/6 it's obviously very similar to others still being built in 2013, but ford made me feel as though I asked for a part for a model-T.

So I've got a unit on order from the internet for a unit that looks like the one you have suggested and where the seller confirms that the manufacturers (LPR maybe) say it's compatible and they list 5040319 as the equivalent ford OEM part.

I'm sceptical to say the least.

But I've been thinking....  Even if the units look very different I suppose what really matters is the way hydraulic fluid is displaced and the volume of that displacement.  The brake pedal and servo dictate some of that, and the remainder would surely be dictated by the master cylinder.  So if piston diameter, stroke and mating faces are the same on both units then I am assuming it'll do the same job.  My logic is telling me that the cavity size inside the master cylinder will make no difference because if the piston diameter and stroke is the same then it's that which dictates how much fluid is displaced and sent through the ABS unit and then onto the calipers etc.  It wouldn't matter if the master cylinder was the size of a bucket, it's the piston diameter and stroke that dictates displacement (assuming piston position relative to servo is the same on both units).

So when the part arrives I'll remove my master cylinder and if the piston diameter and stroke seem the same on both units then I'll fit the replacement and hope for the best.  The port position is very slightly different but I'm hopeful that there's enough play in my brake lines to take up the difference.

I'll update you when I know more.  Big crossed fingers.

Thanks again and best regards, Tony.
