That wet doggie smell

Featured Replies

Hi,

During the last few days I've noticed a wet dog type smell when I use the air con even though I don't own a dog or have had a dog in the car.  I've googled it, and it's something to do with moisture building up and mould forming which is why I'm getting the smell, with one website saying that the air con needs to be regased.  Should I take the internet at their word and book a regass even though I had the car fully services in September this year, or can anyone else here suggest what I could do for a 2017 Ford Focus 1.1 EcoBoost please ?

Any advice is welcomed !!

Thanks again,

Martin

They don’t regass during a service. It more likely needs a clean than a regass. Although it can be done at the same time.

I've a few ideas but I'd probably get in trouble with FOC moderators 🤣

Regarding the smell I would change the cabin air filter, you could even get one of the carbon impregnated ones.

Thanks to you both, I tried to change the filter but I can't seem to get the filter cover removed. When I took the photos I had to use my old torch had a slight blue tinge to it on as my torch light on my phone wouldn't work. Can you suggest how I should remove the top section of the filter cover please as I'm really stuck ? Hopefully you can see what's going on as it was a tight fit.

Thanks.

Lots of videos on YouTube of how its done. I've just changed one on a 2017 Focus RS and the only problem was getting the top of the cover realigned so that it would clip back in. The whole job takes around 10 minutes from Start to Finish which is why Ford charge £60 for a half labour 🤣

Thanks for the advice unofix, but I just can't for the life of me get the top part of the filter housing. The video showed it being done simply by removing but for me nothing budges at the top, guess I'll just keep on at it hopefully it'll work itself loose.

Cheers again.

One step forward then a halt. I managed to get the filter cover off having watched other YouTube videos and it turned out that the floor was in the way and the filter cover came away easily. Now to next issue that I found immediately. There's a really thin cable that runs from behind the dashboard to a selection of cables that are cable managed, which was already positioned there before I bought the car. Does anyone know what that thin cable might be fore ? Sync 3 ? The entire dashboard itself ? My plan is to disconnect the cable, removed the filter and replace it then the cable again, but I just don't want to get it wrong and get landed with a huge bill. This is what I'm talking about.

Thanks.

I've no idea what that thin wire might be.

If you simply disconnect the negative lead from the car battery, and wait 10 minutes it will be safe to disconnect what ever cables you need too.

There are no radio codes or other things needed, so disconnecting the battery won't cause issues. After you change the filter and put the wire(s) back you can reconnect the battery. Again wait a little while before turning the ignition on, just to give all the modules time to wake up and reboot.

Thanks again for the advice, very much appreciated, hopefully that'll do the trick.
