Ford charge between £1400 and £1800

Some independents will do the work for around £900 if you can find one near you. Or you could just not bother and in the next few months just fit a complete new engine for around £5000 🙄

Hi Chris, welcome.

It's not a "problem" as such, just the recommended belt change interval for this engine is 10 years/150,000 miles whichever is soonest. The "problem" is its an expensive job when it does come up.

Looking at it another way, many models of car require a cambelt change at 4/5 years at anywhere from £450-750, so over a 10 year ownership total costs would be similar. A big hit in one go is harder to swallow, though, but if the car is in good condition otherwise and you're happy to keep it longer term, worthwhile.

If you're thinking of a swap anyway you may find selling prices /trade in values affected by the need for the belt change but some sales staff aren't particularly clued up on this either - only one way to find out.

You can then weigh up your options.

The consequences of cambelt failure on this engine are catastrophic engine damage and replacement as mentioned above.

As Unofix mentions, independents are now springing up. This one looks to be not too far from you:
