Electrical issue

Featured Replies

Hi all I have an electrical issue with my mark 1 tdci 4x4 Ford kuga so a few days ago my car flashed up power steering fault then all lights came on for abs and then the speedo stopped working I had a auto electrician out who said the ecu as lost communication with the abs unit he recommended getting the ecu tested but just had a call to say it can’t be tested the strange part is the abs and power steering are still working I tried a new battery but that made no difference as anyone had the same issue please

Get the codes read correctly with FORScan

if you see loads of "Lost communication with...." issues AND more importantly, "THEFT DETECTED" then this will be the common Focus Instrument cluster fault

U codes are comms issue, still suspect cluster

Yes I'd say it has an instrument cluster fault. FORScan even says as much in the DTC readout.

Most likely cluster soldering. Forscan printout looks a little sparse,  is your interface reading both can busses?

i have an ELM with the HS/MS CAN Switch ... i also get an "error" if i don't switch to say MS-CAN, when Forscan says so. I understand some adapters do the switching automatically. But the same "error" message could of course mean a wiring/module issue!

either way.... the instrument cluster (IPC module) on S-max is on the MS-CAN bus. . .

I would invest in a better cable

I don't mind flippin' the switch  it's stable and it was cheap.

I have found that many comm issues are indicative of a bad earth connection. If anyone has a ford car that is five years old or more and you have operated it in a wet or especially salt air environment, start cleaning the ground connections! Even the ones under the seats and instrument panel.
Once the ground connections are compromised the very specific and minimal electrical requirements of the Canbus system will lose communication with various components and that will be registered as a fault. The under hood fuse box is also a source of corrosion that should be inspected and treated with corrosion preventing spray within the first five years, or sooner if you live near a body of saltwater.

my personal electrical and ground connections service kit. I employ a Fluke multimeter and an enhanced OBD2 scan tool for confirmation and code clearing.
