Ecoboost belt recall

Featured Replies

Hi,

My name is Clive. I learned of this problem yesterday and managed to speak to someone at Ford customer service. They were obviously aware of the problem until I quoted details of the problem and that the USA had recalled 140,000 vehicles. I was told it was specific issues in the US which was cobblers. It was due to pressure groups.

Basically I was told to contact my dealer especially if there is a problem with the car. My car  is a November 2016 Eco boost that has only done 40,000 miles. It is serviced every year and has usually only done about 5,000 miles. This is a washout as it seems Ford do not want the cost a recall of this size. The problem causes brake failure which could result in serious injury or worse. I would any update on this and views.

Thank you.

Clive.

Hi Clive, welcome.

This is the Ford recall notice in question:

https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/recall/recalls-and-faqs/23s64-ecosport-and-focus-2016-2022-engine-oil-pump-failure-recall/

It is specifically related to failure of the oil pump drive belt (not the cambelt) on US specification Focus and Ecosport cars with automatic transmission.

Afaik we have not heard further about it being applied to other models in non-US markets.

Presumably you are aware that your cambelt should be changed at 10 years maximum as a normal service action, though quite a few members on here have had it done earlier as a precautionary measure.

How does a cambelt failure cause a brake failure?  Please enlighten me.

Or, do you mean when the engine grenades itself when the wet belt fails, servo assistance is lost?

The Vacuum for the Servo comes from a Vacuum Pump on these cars and bits of the Belt can block the Oil supply to the Pump and it will overheat and fail as far as I know.

I have also heard that bits of the Belt can puncture the Diaphragm in the Pump.

I have never experienced it myself but I would have thought that a Boy Scout could tell from the noise in cases like this that there was something wrong and if the Vacuum in the Servo became below a certain level the a warning and Fault Code would be displayed.

Every days a school day, John. 👍

And my personal view is that the Puncturing of the Diaphragm by bits of the Belt is an urban myth.

The Diaphragms on Vacuum pumps and other Diaphragms do fail even in cars without Welt  Belts.

If you have a spare 20 minutes, this little video is quite informative about the wet belt problems.

Good video.

I guess it's one of those "it seemed a good idea at the time" things.

VW achieved very similar results in terms of compactness, performance and real world fuel consumption from their 1.0 triple which uses a conventional "dry" belt.

It always seemed odd to me that Ford never used the much hyped compactness of the Ecoboost ("cylinder block the size of A4" etc) to any real advantage in terms of packaging, whereas VW built the Up! and it's clones around their 3 pot.

I still feel the original wet belt ecoboost was a lovely thing to drive, as long as you only kept it for 5 years or less - which many fleet users (possibly the real target) would, of course.

I'd never really thought about that before...the Ka 1.2 engine must be physically larger than the 1.0EB engine in the Mondeo!

Hi. I have an automatic ford focus ecoboost 1.0t . I'm having the same issue. I'm in the uk.

Just recently found this forum out of desperation as I have been told damage is done need new engine. Has Ford done anything for UK based?

To everyone who has had their engine replaced.. have you encountered any issues with the car afterwards?

What issue exactly? Only last week you were asking about the correct oil spec - has your engine failed since then?

The recall mentioned in this thread is in the USA for cars with the older "wet" cambelt engine and auto transmission.

A 2020 has the revised engine with camchain, though it still retains a belt for the oil pump. I don't think we've seen anything about a recall on this later engine?

Do you think this a genuine person, or just some random generated AI ?

Since the OP failed to correct the profile and it is still showing a Ford Model: Yujuuu, I tend to think this just an AI bot with time on it's hands. 🤔

Yes, I do often wonder with some of these posts.

I occasionally look at a "Crossword Genius" site when I'm really stuck with a tricky cryptic. That is AI but is quite open about it. It's amusing as it often comes up with an answer but then says it doesn't quite understand why - can anyone help?😀

Hmmm.  Normally with a standard type cryptic clue, (as opposed to the puzzles in the colour supplemrnts) there will be two clues within the text of the clue, meaning you should know that it is correct !

This is an example of the bot asking humans for help:

https://crosswordgenius.com/clue/mostly-silk-product-from-france

Presumably it doesn't know that brie is often described as having a silk-like or velvety texture.
