Ecoboost belt recall

Featured Replies

I have just read an article about belt recall for the1.0lt ecoboost engine on Google from the drive.com,they state there is a recall for the oil pump drive belt &tensioner (loss of oil pressure).and belt degradation.I have contacted Ford on there web address ukcrc@Ford uk.the response was no recalls contact your local dealer for information as they should know,I think I am being robed off, anyone else heard of this,I think this is a call centre type of web site address as it mentions South Africa in the email very strange.alan

Only for US Focus and Ecosport

Ford has issued a recall that applies to nearly 140,000 units of the Focus and the EcoSport built between the 2016 and 2022 model years. The vehicles included in the campaign were built with an engine oil pump drive belt tensioner arm that can break and damage the engine.

Assigned recall number 23V-905 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall includes the following cars:

  • 26,041 units of the Focus built between March 24, 2015, and May 4, 2018.
  • 113,689 units of the EcoSport built between April 3, 2017, and October 12, 2021.

That's a total of 139,730 vehicles on the American market. Ford notes that they're all powered by the turbocharged, 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine and equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. It adds that the defect is found in 100% of the recalled cars.

6F15 auto models only, if you're manual then no issue

We have an ecosport 2019 model, 1.0ltr automatic and the oil warning light came on stating low oil pressure, we booked it into fords we're we purchased it from ASAP. They've said we needs a new engine. It has done 40,000 miles. I've seen this model has been recalled in North America and wondering what our position is and where we stand? Any info would be helpful.

Have you had Ford dealer services at the correct intervals?

Couldn't argue with that.

I would give up now with the Ford dealer and save yourself a lot of time, grief and most importantly money.

The very best you could hope to get from Ford is a good will contribution. They will still expect you to pay around £5000 as your 'part' of the total bill.

In reality you can get a brand new 1.0 ecoboost engine supplied and fitted from several independent garages for under £3500, saving you money and all the pain of trying to get something worth while form Ford.

Just as an example of places to look, check PumaSpeed: https://pumaspeed.co.uk/product-Brand-New-Ford-Service-10-EcoBoost-Engine---Fitted-Only-Price_18898.jsp

That video isn't incorrect in itself but if you pay attention to the detail, it's clearly referring to the US. The NHTSA is mentioned, this is an American body and each national body of Ford Motor Company operates their own policies i.e. just because Ford US is doing a recall of a specific subset of vehicles in the USA, it doesn't mean Ford UK/Europe will do the same.

In fact, there are previous instances of Ford USA being forced to implement a recall in the US (the American authorities tend to be a bit stricter than our own in the UK) but not doing it elsewhere in the world, despite selling the same vehicles in out geographic markets.

Yeah, that video's been posted all over the place, including several times on here. The source of the story seems to be an American website and the issue related to the recall detailed by @Tiexen in his earlier post above, affecting cars with balancer shafts ie automatics.

Your car falls into the recall category, but the recall is for the US only

Do not authorise any work on your vehicle until you have spoken to Ford CRC.

If the car has been serviced to recommendations and seeing as your issue is covered under the new recall, you should get an engine.

The issue is not the cam belt degrading, but the oil pump belt degrading, loosing teeth and spinning, causing low oil pressure.

This only affects 1.0 Ecoboosts with the 6F15 automatic transmission (but not Fiesta for some reason) Ecosport and Focus, which your is.

These engines have a balancer shaft, which is what is causing the strain on the belt.

Manuals are not affected

  • 1 month later...

I have a Spanish registered Fiesta Ecoboost ST line manual 2017. Reading the previous comments am I right that the cars  affected are automatic’s and not manual’s. Thanks

The recall is only in the US. It does not include the Fiesta.

All 1.0 Ecoboost engines fitted with a wet timing belt are affected by the belt disintegrating.

Yes, the US recall is for automatics (I don't think they got the 1.0 manual anyway) though as already mentioned, all wet belt 1.0 ecoboosts are susceptible to wet belt degredation.

Yet another feature on the BBC Watchdog slot last night, as mentioned on another thread.

Hi, my wet belt just failed.  I am in a similar situation.  I spoke to Ford and they said there aren't any recalls but like you I have seen articles in the press about a recall.  I have a Titanium 15 plate with 67k miles on the clock.

You're on the wrong continent.  It's US only.

I had a dream that I got a payout in 20 years time for the great wetbelt scandal of the 2010s. 🤣

I can just hear the tv adverts now. "Did you own a ford ecoboost engine between 2012 and 2023? You could be entitled to thousands in compensation. Thats our no win no fee guarentee"

Hi there ,

My daughter has a 1.0 L Ecoboost Fiesta 2015 Zetec S

Now done 80000 miles and 4 days before it was having a service the oil light came on mid journey and the engine started rattling. We have now been told that she needs a new engine. No way can she afford a new engine and this really is caused by a design fault so it’s about time that Ford did recall all these cars or at least advise people what needs doing before it’s too late

That is an EMERGENCY and requires the engine be stopped immediately. Continuing to run the engine with the oil pressure warning light on will result in the total destruction of the engine.  🙁

Sorry to hear that, but you're a 2015 with 80,000 miles, you've got no chance.

There are plenty of used 1.0 Ecoboost for sale, take the sump off BEFORE you part with your cash, if the gauze on the pick up is clear make sure you change the cam & oil pump belts before you fit it to your car.

Don't buy a brand new engine, there's no need

If they won't let you take the sump off to check the pump, walk away

Ensure the oil and filter are changed EVERY year using the correct oil and NEVER use flush

If you type in google Ford recalls uk, the first one gives you the option to type in the full chassis number and check if there is a recall on your vehicle

Hi, if you type into google Ford recalls uk, the first one gives you the option to type in the full chassis number and tells you if there is a recall on your vehicle

You can also check on Gov.uk, when doing an MOT check. The option still comes up even if your car is not yet due  it's 1st MOT.

Having looked into it, it is only the US that have recalled and not the UK.

I have the same issue with my 2016 1L Ecoboost!!
