What clutters a broadband connection up that a reboot clears

Featured Replies

After a router reboot, I can get about 50mbs. After a week or 2, it drops to about 25mbs, but a reboot gets it back up again. Doesn't bother me as it's not an onerous task to turn off/turn on again only 5 minutes every few weeks. But I'm curious, what clutters the connection up in the first place?

I'd suspect you might be getting rather too many errors in the wireless connection. I think when the router detects a high error rate it reduces the bit rate to try to get a more reliable connection.

Try clearing your DNS and resetting your network. I've just [yesterday] had BRSK Full Fibre installed 500up and 500 down £25.00 a month. Ran a speedcheck and after 24 hrs am getting 350 each way dual band 5.0 and 2.4  it will bed in and get faster allegedly.  Free install and all Fibre cable from start to end. Thus far impressed, should really have put this in things i like

If I knew how to, I probably would try that 😂

Have just lifted the hood on my Sky router settings. Can see nothing close to what you described. Thank you anyway, I'll remain delightfully ignorant.

thats not in your router settings my bad i should have said laptop/PC etc

for the router as long as you HAVE ALL the passwords do a factory reset.

as an aside your not running the paid for anti-virus garbage are you ????? they can slow a system. Basic windows defender with a decent cleaner run after you shut down for the day I recommend Ccleaner free been using and recommending it for years

Aahhh, yep, that makes more sense. 25 years ago I did a trial of 'Norton' AV, it slowed my PC down that much as to make it virtually useless and I thought I'd be better off with a virus! I have used FREE AVG for decades now, as well as CCleaner, and GlaryUtilities, and MalwareBytes. All free. (I even have AVG and CCleaner on my phone)

Sounds like you have a noisy line (electrical interference). The speed drops to keep it in sync. When you reboot it will be when there is less noise so it reconnects at the fastest possible for your line.

That’s why true fibre broadband is so good. It’s light not electrical signals so can’t be affected by EM interference.

Broadband engineer here :punk:

Many unanswered questions, including how you're testing your speed? Is it via your service providers speed testing facility? Wifi or ethernet connection when testing? Are you using a website such as Ookla?

Most of the time, the router settings isnt the issue, yes it will cache a small amount of files, but rarely enough to cause a speed loss, and if you're finding a reboot doing the trick, all you're doing is resetting the connection to the wireless devices, to which I would say ask your service provider for a new router.

If speeds drop, and stay low, then it would suggest a line fault which would need engineer investigation.

Hope that helps!

Yippeee... I use a web site below to check my speed.

https://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/

Though I also use others and they all give similar results. Only this week I noticed speed dropped to 20mbs. After a reboot, it leaped back up to 50mbs?

Like I said, it's not life threatening, and the fix of a reboot is a minimal 5 minute effort so not onerous, I was just curious why it does this...

I've been using broadband speed checker for donkeys years. Use it on my mobile device too.

As for Norton. OMG what an absolute nightmare to get it out of ones computer completely. That shyitte is a no holes barred dictator towards computers. Hate it with a passion.

Many if not all paid for systems clog a computer, Norton being the worst offender. Just use Ms Defender and Ccleaner at the end of the day, make it a habit.

Many browser also choke systems as all built on the Webview and Webview2 platform. Waiting to get a look at Arc as built from the ground up with security and the user in mind.

Sounds ominously like you need to replace the router!

But if it doesn't bother you particularly then carry on sir 🤣

I got a new replacement router sent to me last month, still in it's box. It's such a trivial 'fault', I just live with it. Can't be bothered with the hassle of changing it, and all the passwords on various devices, and visitor devices too LOL
