Focus cam belt recall

Featured Replies

Hi guys I've read several pages online about ford focus from 2016 to 2018 1.0 ecoboost being recalled because of faulty tensioners and also the belt breaking up effecting the brakes, anyone got any info on this and is it likely to come to anything? Thanks again for any help with this.

The recall is only for automatics.  No tensioner fitted to manuals.

As far as I can see, the recall is only in the USA?

Surely it doesn't matter if its automatic or manual I wouldnt have thought it would effect it as its the same engine.

It isn't the same inside.  Automatics have an additional balance shaft next to the oil pump.  That means they need a longer oil pump belt with a tensioner fitted to keep the belt tight.

Manuals just use a short belt around the oil pump sprocket and crank sprocket, no tensioner needed.

Oh ok I've got a 2017 ecoboost and the brakes have faded due to the vacum being blocked with belt remnants so surely a safety issue is we nearly crashed when I realised it.

This recall is specifically linked to the tensioner failure I'm afraid.

Belt degradation and oil contamination has been known about on these engines for about a decade now.  Ford would go bankrupt if they recalled and replaced the timing belts on every single 1.0 EcoBoost built from 2011 to 2021 so I can't them doing that.

Ok thanks for your reply to this, do you happen to know the list of parts required to change the timing belt? I know I read somewhere saying you need to fit a new washer to crankshaft pulley didn't know if I would need any other extra parts.

Here is the Ford service video including the tools and parts required.

How has your vacuum been blocked by belt remnants? If that’s what’s happened then I would say that oil in the vacuum system is a much bigger problem.

I’m assuming you know for certain it’s a vacuum issue and not contaminated brake fluid or a vacuum leak?

The 1.0 ECOboost has a mechanical vacuum pump that is driven by the camshaft. This pump can actually fail in 2 different ways when the wetbelt(s) deteriorate:

1. Once the oil pump strainer becomes blocked with wetbelt particles the oil pressure drops significantly. Being at the top of the lubrication system the vacuum pump is usually the first that fails as a result of oil starvation.

2. When the wetbelt(s) deteriorate the tiny particles that are small enough to pass the oil pump strainer will start spreading throughout the engine. At first these particles will be collected by the oil filter. However once the oil filter becomes clogged the integrated spring loaded bypass valve inside the filter opens and unfiltered oil containing wetbelt particles will start spreading throughout the engine. The particles clog the strainer of the vacuum pump and again causes it to fail by oil starvation.

Once the vacuum pump fails the non return valve will prevent oil from entering the vacuum lines. Symptoms of a failing vacuum pump are less or even no boost pressure since the vacuum is used to close the wastegate of the turbocharger and less brake assistance.

On a 1.0 ECOboost a failed vacuum pump should never be replaced without investigating the actual cause of the failure. Just replacing the vacuum pump usually causes failure of the new vacuum pump within a short period.
