Ecoboost 1.0 petrol 2016

Featured Replies

Hi while driving today My brakes went solid and power steering went off. Car went into limp mode. A few moments later the car cut out. This is what is coming up. Everyone thinking timing or??

Have you been able to restart the engine ?

Doesn't look good, I wouldn't try to crank the engine anymore until you've checked the belt is OK

My guess would be cambelt failure.

The vacuum pump (that provides assistance to the brakes) is driven off the exhaust camshaft. Unlikely to be the vacuum pump itself as that wouldn't explain the engine cutting out completely.

Don't power crank the engine to prevent the possibility of further damage. However, if you have a suitable socket set and want to do a basic check yourself, remove the oil filler cap, slowly turn the crankshaft off the crank bolt and see if the exhaust camshaft rotates. An assistant and extra lighting of some sort would make this easier, as would removing the spark plugs if you're able to. DON'T force it if it doesn't want to rotate.

If it does turn out to be cambelt, due to snapping, losing teeth or low oil pressure take a look at Facebook page 'Ford Ecoboost Nightmare' if you haven't already done so. Lots of people there in a similar position.

Just like to point out that I never advised cranking the engine !

I asked a question has the OP been able to restart the engine ? 🤔

Regardless of the answer to my question, we all know that if the cam belt has snapped then the engine is beyond economically saving. 🙁

Reading the OP is slightly confusing.  Power-steering is electric, not vacuum operated.  The only way for that to cut out is low battery voltage.  So for that to stop while the engine was still running would be very odd unless there was a battery or alternator fault.  I think the engine probably cut out sooner than realised if both steering and brakes failed at the same time.

Sorry Unofix, I didn't mean that, but reading it back now I can see how my way of wording can be misinterpreted. English was never my strongest point. Edited my post.

Tom, also corrected my reference to steering assistance.

Tom, I didn't know the 2016 has electrical PAS. My 2012 Focus has a vacuum line from the top of the vacuum pump for PAS.

Maybe it depends on engine? Pretty sure my 2012 Focus was epas. I thought all mk3 were tbh.

I'm not sure which component you're looking at but that's not the PAS pump.

All Mk3 Focus have full electric PAS (motor on the steering column) except the 1.6 Ti-VCT which uses hydraulic PAS.

No modern Fords use vacuum for PAS.

Yes they are. I screwed up. I'll get back in my box.

I've corrected my error and am now back in my box.

No harm done, and all good in the end 👍

I think you're suffering from Ecoboost rebuild syndrome 🤣

I think I may be suffering from the onset of dementia. Of course I knew that the vacuum system has nothing to do with the PAS but I still typed it. What with the fiasco losing my key fob again I am genuinely concerned.

Oh dear. You are not alone - just had an email from a mate and he got the name of his granddaughter wrong. (Not just misspelt either - completely different name!😀).
