2nd gear issues

Hi. I have a 2012 Zetec s which has developed an intermittent issue with 2nd gear. It's almost like it doesn't stay in 2nd. It temporarily got worse when i needed the wheel arms replacing but that helped a little. It still does it but maybe just once a week if that? The mechanic's I've spoken to think the gear box will probably need replacing but I'm just wondering if it maybe something simpler that we've overlooked. My mechanic is reluctant to strip the gear box and look...as its a massive job. Anyone had this?

    It might be helpful if you could clarify what model that is - Fiesta/Focus etc, and which engine - petrol/diesel, and then repost in the appropriate model forum.
