MK3 1.0 Ecoboost Oil on Spark Plugs

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Decided to change the spark plugs on my 63 plate 1.0 focus ecoboost engine today.  Easy enough job but had a little panic when I found oil on the threads of all 3 spark plugs.  No idea how long it's been like that as not noticed any issues with the engine, no loss of power, blue smoke or any misfiring.  The car has just under 59000 miles on the clock but it did have a new engine fitted under the Ford warranty a few years ago at 28000 miles.

Here is what the 3 plugs look like.  I have obviously wiped the oil off them but the threads were covered in the stuff.  There didn't appear to be any oil in the spark plug wells when I looked before taking them out.

possibly the camshaft cover seal leaking?... it is probably a Gasket sealant but maybe Rubber? I would be inclined to give all of the Camshaft Cover Bolts a slight nip?

Will certainly look into it Grisleigh thanks

😉 it has often been the cause on the many engines I've worked on 👍 Good luck

Cheers Grisleigh, I actually think that may be the issue reading stories online plus you said it too.  Job looks easy enough to do myself just don't have a torque wrench and need to find some instructions on the right way to tighten it back down. Any tips for the job from yourself, also if I just got a garage to do it what in your opinion would I be looking at price wise?  I know the gasket is only £15/£20.

I can probably get your specific torque & sequence if you can give me either your reg number or vin? 👍🤞

That's brilliant thanks. Is that all available on the ford website?

it's all generally available online but you will need either an ETIS (no longer available) or a PTS account for the specifics

If I can help, let me know & I'll see what I can do 👍

Will do bud thanks for your help.  If your in Liverpool in the next few days let me know and you can change it for me 🤣.  I'm no mechanic but would give it a go.  Just don't want to mess it up.  What would a garage charge for a job like that?

Sorry Steven, I am based in Essex... The job itself isn't difficult but it is involved getting to it? I would suggest 1-1.5 hours work @ whatever the Garages hourly rate maybe...I can't recall if theres a specific Gasket or just sealant but either way a good clean & a smear of sealant would do the job I would think 👍 Hope you get it sorted though Best regards Leigh

No worries bud, there is an actual gasket for it, only cost £10/£15.  Found a video and doesn't look too bad, just don't have a torque wrench so will see what a garage says and get it done properly.

Well done mate.. It maybe worthwhile getting them to confirm that the Gasket is weeping first? might save a couple of quid (But I reckon that is very probably the issue)

Hope it pans out well for you either way 😉

(Just a thought) It may be cheaper to buy a Torque wrench & Gasket than the cost of a Garage 🤔

& you would have the Torque wrench for any future Jobs £££😎

Will have a look, as you say it's an easy job.
