Not happy with quality of Haynes online manual

Featured Replies

Here is the content of an email I have just sent to Haynes - please read before subscribing to their autofix manuals. I will update on the outcome.

"

Earlier today I subscribed to a Haynes Autofix manual for my car, a 2020 Ford Focus 1.5tdi Ecoblue, supplying the car registration to get the correct manual. (Order details attached)

I am primarily interested in the specific procedures for changing the oil and filter for this vehicle.

On downloading some of the information from the manual I was shocked to find that

1) The oil filter removal pictures do not relate to my car at all and, moreover, the instructions given are of a general nature, not vehicle-specific.

2) The video did not relate to my car either - it appears to be of 2 different makes/models of car, not including mine

3) On closer inspection of the downloaded PDF of the instructions, the engine sump appears to have "BMW" stamped on it - my car is a Ford

4) The downloaded instructions are headed "FORD Focus MkIV 1.5 (Ecoblue) 2022-", mine is a 2020 model as specified when I purchased the manual.

In short - I thought I was paying for vehicle-specific information akin to that contained in my collection of Haynes manuals going back to the late 1960's, but what I have is a pile of general information which does not fit the vehicle that I specified.

Your comments and or advice would be appreciated thank you as to what has gone wrong.

Regards - R. Murphy

I look forward to reading the mountain of BS that'll be coming your way from Haynes 🤣

Offer to cancel and refund accepted.

Email exchange included haynes suggesting that I puirchased the manual for the 1.0 Ecoboost,  and me pointing out that that use of my reg no. should not cause this to happen, and that this is at odds with the "EngineSpecification" part of the manual being for the 1.5 Ecoblue diesel, which would be disappointing for anyone requesting the 1.0 ecoboost manual! And it in any case would no explain the issues with the "Change Engine Oil and Filter" section of the manual!

I'm now looking for any info on how to remove the oil filter which, if I've identified it correctly, is below a mass of flexible pipes, plus whether I can (like my old Skoda) just vacuum the oil out through the dipstick tube (This works, and was recommended for my Skoda but doesn't for the MX5). I'm getting a bit old for crawling underneath and on big benefit of the Skoda was that I could do an oil change from above the engine!

The oil filter is still in the same place on the 1.5 EcoBlue as it has been on the 1.6 TDCI since 2004, right hand side, front of engine, accessible from above.  You may need to remove the air intake pipe if you can't get your hand & the filter around it.  But the radiator hose can just be flexed out of the way.  Once you have access to the filter cover, it's as simple as any other filter.  I really don't think you need to pay for a manual for this, I'm sure you've got enough experience to work out the access route.

I've vacuumed out both a 16v & 8v 1.6 TDCI which worked fine.  The sump design is the same on the the 1.5 EcoBlue so it should work the same though can't confirm 100%.  Best bet is to try it and measure how much oil comes out.  If it's much less than expected then just put it back and have it drained from the sump by a young person at a later date instead.  Though on that note, VAG have now moved their TDCI oil filters right underneath, so it's no longer possible to do an oil filter change from above on those!

Well, I've just downloaded the Ford manual from "EasyManuals", and its very deteiled (and big!).

It seems to confirm (if I've intepreted the visual instructions right) removal of the air filter/pipe and moving hoses out of the way as TomsFocus suggests.

It does seem to contradict the info in the Haynes manual, which stated the oil drain plug torue as 35nm - the Easymanuals version states the drain plug seal is an O ring with a tightening torque of 7nm - which is similar to a Vauxhall I once had!

There are two different sumps for the 1.5 EcoBlue.  The metal sump with metal plug should be 35Nm.  Plastic sump with plastic plug should be 7Nm.

Tom, your knowledge of all things mechanical never ceases to amaze me!

So a quick glance should tell me which it is then! Ta.
