Blown exhaust sound

Featured Replies

Hi,

I recently bought a second hand Ford Fiesta 2010 1.2 petrol S, but when I took it for a spin I heard what sounded like a blown exhaust or blow back when accelerating in 2-5th gear.  Runs fine at low spends, it’s just when I accelerate I hear a sound like a valve or escaping air and a guttural growl engine sound like blowback or a blown exhaust.  No lights, cruises fine.  I drive with the window open and it’s rather loud and bound to attract attention.
I have read on this forum that the sound is normal and unique to Fiestas.  Is this true ?  The car passed its NCT/MOT so I doubt there is an exhaust fault but I may get it looked at for piece of mind.

in addition, the car had a new timing belt fitted before sale as there was no record of it having been done.  But now, alongside the exhaust acceleration sound there is a metallic whine like a loose fan belt, but only under acceleration.  I presume the timing belt needs further adjustment ?

Any comment or reassurance welcomed.

Hi Charlotte,

it's better to post specific model related queries in the appropriate forum (Fiesta, in this case) as there's more chance of getting replies rather than in this general area.

Not really clear exactly what model you have - S was not a normal trim - there's Zetec S but that's a 1.6. Smallest "normal" Fiesta in 2010 was a 1.25 which I assume you have.

Not sure what you've read but having had a standard 1.25 in the past I certainly wouldn't say it was loud enough to attract attention unless someone has messed with it and fitted a non-standard exhaust, or the exhaust is, indeed, faulty and blowing.

The other noise could be several things - does it vary relative to the road speed of the car, or the revs of the engine? Either way, if the seller did work on the car before sale I'd be inclined to pop it back there in the first instance (I'm assuming it was a dealer?).
