Trolly jack points Focus Mk2.5?

Featured Replies

First time using Trolley jack & Axle stand. Please help with best areas to lift.

I couldn't find a photo of standard 1.6 underbody.  I believe the photo is an ST model but underbody look quite similar.

Can someone please let me know if its safe to lift the car with Trolley jack using points A,B & C?

Once car is raised, I plan to put Axle stand on the pinch weld with one of those rubber grooved adapters.

Thanks

I put my axel stands at C, cupping the round part. Beware though, the very first time I used them I nearly learned a very hard lesson - I raised the vehicle up on one side, put the axel stand in place, then went and did the other side. Whilst doing the other side the vehicle shifted (despite bricks blocking the rear wheels) and almost came completely off the first axel stand, which I almost failed to notice - So always double check the first while lifting and putting the second in place!! Also, always have a backup.

I've only recently gotten a trolley jack, previously I was using the manufacturer's emergency scissor jack on the pinch weld jacking point. I also wasn't certain where to lift with the trolley jack and was especially nervous having previously tried using a cheap bottle jack in the area to the left of A (where those three holes are) which I recall started to form a dent due to the surface area of the bottle jack being so small. I ended up using the trolley jack in the same location and it was fine. Location A, on the underfloor brace, might be even better, I might try that instead next time.

I wouldn't use B, you'd be balancing on the very small head of the bolt. I'm not certain I'd use C if I were putting my axel stands elsewhere, the round bushing shell is perhaps more likely to slip off the jack than at A.

Another option - you mention the "rubber groove adapters", or in other words a "rubber hockey puck with a slot in it", instead of using these with axel stands, you could use one with your trolley jack to lift from the pinch weld.

For trolley jack I have an ice hockey puck with a slot cut into it that I then use to lift the car using the side seams where a scissor jack would go.

That's exactly what I use... cheap as chips!

Mine was even cheaper - zilch. I made it up from scrap material. Profiled the slot to the same dimensions as the supplied jack.

I thought they should be stepped, with the inner part higher than the outer. That is the shape of the supplied Jack with my Mk2.5 and Mk4.

I am not familiar with correct part names. Please excuse the A,B & C diagrams

Thanks RD457. I think my trolly jack won't slip off easily from the wishbone C area as the saddle is cup shaped & will hold the rounded Bush quite well. I am a little concerned that the Bush doesn't rest on anything directly above but Instead secured by two bolts on one side.

For a brake pad replacement job. To put the axle stand on the wishbone rounded bush (C) I jacked the car up from the front seam. Couldn't get enough clearance for axle stand (to sit on the C) so continued with lifting and then backed off when I saw the rear wheel lift aswell. Abandoned the brake pads job because I wasn't sure if I should continue lifting.

If I use trolly jack on (C or A) then I can place Axle stand on the front seam without the rear wheel lifting.

If all goes to plan I want to attempt replacing wishbone. So area A might be the best option to jack up. Would it be best to place the saddle exactly under the bolt?

StephenFord, mjt & troy 45 thank you too. I will place an order for that rubber pad/hocky puck for the saddle.

Mjt nicely done with DIY. I don't  have the correct tools for shaping the metal bar to profile. In my opinion looks like more robust ti place on the seam.

I wouldn’t worry about the rear wheel lifting as you’re raising the car on jack - it’ll always get to a point when this happens. When I’m swapping wheels around Ill have the car higher enough jacked on the front sill point for both wheels to be up.

Of course it’s important to have hand brake on and chock wheels on the opposite side.

I’ve trusted to the trolley jack for most of my jobs - wheel swaps, brake pads etc just used axle stands when I was upgrading the brakes and calipers as the car was going to be up for a day or 2 and needed to cycle the steering to check the new brake hoses cleared everything. Was also trying to fit mk3 RS brake ducts but gave up on that in the end.

Yeah it'll always lift up a bit at the back, don't worry too much about that as troy's just said.

I felt the same at first but I've done it multiple times now and it's been just fine.

Anywhere roughly in the area where the lift point is lifting in your picture should be fine, or even off to the side where I said I've lifted mine from.

Ok thanks again, I placed an order for those rubber pads. Once I receive them, will try again for the brake pads.
