How to add adaptive cruise control

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I have bought from someone a ford focus mk iv 2019 titanium.
It is automatic, has keyless entry and start button, sign/speed recognition and normal CC. Also the steering wheel had the big CAN on it, not the lane centering and car keep distance buttons. It also has lane departure assist.

I want to add adaptive cruise control on it (like the lane centering assist to keep it centered and keep distance from the car in front stop/go)

I’ve read on the forum some posts and I’ve seen that ie possible, but I’d like some more info. Like what parts do I need exactly, what needs configuring and things like this. As I’m completely new to this and never done something similar. I also don’t know anyone in my area that those and neither did ford when I took my car to them.

active cruise uses radars and various ECUs to understand what's out there...

any retrofit is possible - but the cost, expertise, time and effort can be extreme

most cars are not built to be upgradable - rather the accountants insist they are all built down to the lowest possible poverty spec and only the toys bought at purchase are fitted on the production line

so we can have many wiring looms that are missing the pertinent connectors,
often the wrong windscreen, the higher spec vehicles need for cameras and sensors
the wrong steering wheel (on the mk 2 if you want cruise the steering wheel and its airbag are different)
the physical radar / other sensors
new trim pieces (many radars fit inside a different radiator grille or bumper etc.)
various modules and switches are missing or are a lower spec so need swapping out to high end ones
then we get the complex part of software and coding various modules

the cost could easily come out at £2k then you have the fun of persuading someone to insure your now non-std car...

my non ford car has it - as at the time a 3k option but buying parts from the parts counter is >7k and even on ebay for 10 year old secondhand stuff all the bits say from a crashed car will be >1500 - and always no wires (the nightmare part !!!) as the breakers always cut through wiring looms

Hi, a few people on the FORScan Forums have managed to do this.

If you're lucky and have a radar fitted and have the correct camera fitted you will need to change the steering wheel buttons to ACC spec, including Stop&Go button as you're automatic and configure the CCM, SCM, IPMA, PSCM, BCMi & IPC and, possibly, ABS

"CAN" button just means "CANCEL" for normal CC

interesting point ...there has be a change of heart with VAG & BMW realising if the software can be locked down well enough - we can lease out toys

So a medium spec A3 has ACC built in, but turned off in software - and you can buy a one off license for £810, annual use for something like £200 or or rent it for £30 a month
With BMW now doing heated seats via your phone app for £20 a month

Why don't you simply buy a car with it on and save your time and effort and probable stress.

Just because the German manufacturers have those 'for rent' options other manufacturers like Ford don't.

L

Plus buying a car with it on already will work out cheaper.

Or use VAGCOM or E-Net and turn it on yourself

And Forscan with the Ford and turn on ACC, DAP was a £1000 option

BMW have been turning themselves in knots to try and lock this down... 2 years back they were building in tamper with the module and it self destructs

To protect against unauthorised vehicle network manipulation that may put car systems and customers at risk, many car manufacturers require authorised scan tool access to perform necessary diagnosis and repair. Compatible diagnostic tools can connect to secure vehicle gateways

EU regulation says the manufacturer has to allow access, so the programmes are designed to access, FORScan is the same.

They're basically an open version of dealer level software, works the same

secure vehicle gateway - encrypted garbage means your average tool can't access latest cars for the interesting bits, its the new tech to stop playing at home - yes you can access - but only registered tools to registered users - its really trying to stop third party garages doing all the updates you need more and more, (as the quality of software has descended to utter jokeware) and it can only be done online with registered accounts and legit tools - a secret way around the law trying to force it in to being being dealer only in reality

How do I know if the radar that I have is the correct one for this ?
Also  any idea or recommendations how to configure these ?:

Coming back to ford from Peugeot, sadly that's not the case, all modern stellantis cars (2017 onwards) require network connected programming and there isn't a cracked software for it unlike ford.

There will be, eventually

They're not very popular (mod wise) that's the problem

Well the solution most people had was to use a lexia cable off eBay and a pirated older version of diagbox but that stopped working on 2017 onwards stellantis and programming is linked to vin and network on pugs, but I digress as this is a ford forum and I'll leave my venting of frustrations with Peugeot at a rest now😂.

That is interesting to know!  I used to use a Peugeot Planet (PP2K) clone regularly on early 2000's Peugeots.  Did have a Lexia clone as well but don't remember ever using that one.  I didn't know they changed the whole system in 2017 with the Stellantis takeover though.  As Dave says, hopefully there will be some cracked software eventually.

Manufacturers are also keen to prevent any unauthorized modifications. With secure gateway access, only authorized individuals or technicians are granted the ability to make changes to the vehicle's software or configurations. This measure aids in preventing unauthorized modifications that could lead to malfunctions, performance issues, or potential safety risks.

Additionally, secure gateways serve as a defence against vehicle hacking attempts. As vehicles become increasingly interconnected, hackers seek to exploit vulnerabilities in vehicle systems. Secure gateway access helps safeguard against unauthorised entry and potential hacking attempts, ensuring both the vehicle's safety and the privacy of its owners.

Finally, vehicle manufacturers enforce secure gateway access to retain control over software updates and compatibility with third-party tools. This means that only authorized diagnostic tools, such as Autel's diagnostic products, can access the necessary data and perform appropriate diagnostics and repairs on vehicles.

Screams of anti - right to repair

that’s exactly what it is....   yes high end stuff can reach it - but only with paid access to the manu servers....

Hackers have broken into some of the biggest retailers in the country lately.  It can't be all that difficult to hack vehicle software...
