Gearstick went floppy and aa fixed with cable ties

Hello, I was driving my 2001 ford focus last week and suddenly my gearbox popped and I couldn’t put the car in gear at all, there was no resistance on the gearstick and it could be moved 360 degrees. The aa man came out to fix it and essentially cable tied the gear selector to the gearbox, or so I’m told (I don’t know a lot about cars!). Anyway, my loyal garage can’t get me booked in for a month and I’d like it done sooner and elsewhere have quoted £800! I don’t have the budget for that at the moment so wondering if I can order the part myself and my partner’s dad who’s decently knowledgeable can fit it. Does anyone know what this piece might be? It looked to be a small rubber ring..

Hi,

That sounds like the rubber bush from the gearshift cable.

The £800 is probably for a full new set of cables fitted...but that still seems far too much!

We need to know which gearbox you have to work out the correct cables.  One example here though - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/296186557369?

Sometimes you can buy the bushes individually.  Again, need to know exactly which one has broken.  But here's one example.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/386175209842?
