Duratorq 2.0 Engine Knock

Hi Guys,

I recently bought a Ford Edge 2016 2.0 210 which is a great car but noticed on the first start each morning when cold, car being left for 10 hours or so, that there seems to be quite a prominent knock.

This knock reduces in sound once the engine is up to operating temperature and increases with engine RPM.

This is my first diesel so could just be that I need to get used to the noise but if anybody has the same engine and could clarify whether this sounds normal or not it would be my mind at ease.

Cheers

Sounds like a normal diesel to me

Thanks for replying. There is a knock sound behind the normal diesel engine noise that I can hear unless that is normal too but it’s much louder on startup. Was worried about piston slap etc

All diesels knock when they're cold, if you're concerned and don't know when the oil was last changed, change the oil and filter

Use good quality diesel

Cheers. I changed the oil and all filters last weekend and it sounds exactly the same. Put a full tank of premium in and some redex too.

I have a 2.0 Ecoblue and it sounds very similar first thing in the morning, it's just the way diesel engines are 👍

Took to a mechanic yesterday and he said he can hear a knock but can’t identify where it is coming from and that a ford specialist will need to listen to worn out where it is coming from.

Took to Ford and they said there is a knock/tapping on cold but as it goes away and dies down when the engine is up to operating temperature then not to worry about it. It could be a tappet/lifter or injector but was told its a needle in a haystack.

If the noise gets worse or changes and a problem develops, then to take it back.
