Engine scrapped on my 1.5 TDCI Ford Focus Titanium

Featured Replies

Hi all

New to the forum and just wondered if anyone has had any info on my problem. I own a 2020 Focus titanium 1.5 TDCI that developed engine knock. I stopped the car the instant it happened and has the car transported to Ford. They told me that a big bearing had gone in the engine due to an "oil pump failure". They couldn't tell me why the oil pump failed and said that the belt was fine. (Im not sure if it's a wet belt in my model) They then told me i needed to Shell out 10k for a new engine. When I asked why they couldn't just replace the bearings and pump they said that you can't replace the big bearings on these cars.. I've never heard of this before and they wouldn't tell me why so just wondering if anyone on here would have any clue as to why this apparently can't be done? Any help would be great. The car is just out of warranty and so they aren't playing ball with me. Many thanks

Joe

The 1.5 TDCI doesn't use a wetbelt.

The oil pump is driven directly from the crankshaft, no belt or chain needed.

These pumps very rarely fail.  If that is what's happened, you've been very unlucky.  I haven't seen another on here so far.

Regarding big end bearings, it's probably not worth replacing them as the crank is likely to be damaged as well.  Ford dealerships don't seem to do internal engine repairs.  They just chuck a new engine in.

I can see big end bearings available online for the 1.5 BlueHDi, which I believe will be the same as 1.5 EcoBlue.  However, personally I'd recommend dropping a reconditioned engine in instead.  That should be around £4k.  You will probably need to have the car transported to an Indy garage or engine ship for that, as Ford have strict rules around the work they can do.

Don't let the Ford dealer do any further work on your car or you'll go bankrupt !!!

If it were me I'd be contacting North West Engines [ https://northwestengines.co.uk/ ] to see what they could offer. I would expect something could be done for £4K

As you are a 2020, so just out of warranty AND providing the car has FULL service history, I would contact Ford CRC and see if they will contribute as this is a rare occurrence, as they may.

Do this BEFORE you agree to any work.

If not, this is a very popular engine, you could fit a second hand replacement

Doesn't sound like a great dealer! Might it be worth a go at Ford themselves with a car just out of warranty and (I assume) FFSH?
