Coolant tank boiling and smoking

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

i have an issue with my Ford Fusion. It started smoking under the hood after a short trip.

when I came back home I tried to look under the hood whike engine running and noticed after a few minutes that the tank was bubbling more and more. Once it reached the cap smoke and coolant started leaking.

I googled and a lot of forums mention head gasket. I am not sure it is head gasket because there is no “mayonnaise” in oil, nor oil in the coolant reservoir.

Could this still be head gasket ? Do you have any idea on what to check ?

thank you very much

Sounds like head gasket, yes

Thank you for your reply. I now looked at it and it seems like my radiator fan is not working.

Could this be the issue given that it boils in reservoir ? How would you make a difference between bubbling from boiling coolant in the radiator fan and from head gasket pushing air in the tank ?

If the fan is not working and you are boiling then I suspect the thermostat needs replacing

Try that first

Headgasket can be tested using a CO2 sniffer test on the coolant reservoir.  That checks for exhaust gasses in the coolant.

Most headgasket failures don't result in mayo.  That's a common misconception.  They generally fail between cylinder and water ways so no oil gets mixed in.

Great, in that case I will test the co2 sniffer test, that’s a great idea. I will keepy you guys updates, thanks a lot.
