Smax cutting out

Featured Replies

Hi new here. Can anyone help. I have a smax 2010 it’s rough idling and keeps cutting out when coming up to lights or roundabouts. Had it scanned and got some codes.
p02fa-00

p0219-00

p0130-29.
Many thanks if you can help 😊

Change the O2 sensor(s)

If you use FORScan to read the DTC's it should tell you the fault "Bank 1" sensor 1 or sensor 2

I'm afraid you have exhausted my knowledge on the subject 🤣

You haven't told us which engine it's for?  Assuming it's 2.0 TDCI (as most are) then the precat lambda is on the elbow right next to the turbo behind the engine.  Basically, if you can reach the turbo from above on the S-Max, you should be able to reach the sensor.

Worth noting that only one of those codes is for the 02 sensor.  One is for the throttle body which is common failure if this is a 2.0 TDCI and would be the first thing I'd replace in this case.

The other code is for engine overspeed.  This is a weird one that basically means the engine has been over-revved for several seconds.  It can be caused by fitting wheels that are too large without recalibrating, or by a slipping clutch, for example.

Sorry it the 2.0L tdci sports. 19577 on clock had the car from new.
car pulls fine no problem with the clutch. Ie handbrake on car dips at back and try’s to pull off. Fingers crossed as I’ve just had a 1k bill for my bmw clutch ☹️

Oh dear.

That code can be caused by dropping into too low a gear by mistake, selecting 3rd instead of 5th when coming off a motorway for example.

Less than 20k miles on a 14 year old car does suggest a lot of slow traffic and clutch use, so I wouldn't be surprised if the clutch was getting worn by now, but usually you would notice it when driving.  Torque & rpm are restricted when stationary now so modern cars won't always slip on a pull away test.

The overspeed is measured by the cam & crank sensors, and compared to the road speed sensors (either on gearbox or measured through ABS) so it may just be caused by a faulty sensor if you can't remember an actual over-speed situation.

Sadly those 3 fault codes together don't really point to one single fault.  I don't think the 02 sensor will cause a rough idle and stalling on a diesel.  So my money would still be on the throttle body for now.
