Am I being ripped off

Featured Replies

I put my 2013 focus 1.6tdci into get an oil leak looked at, they said the rocker cover gasket is warped and needs replacing.

They say all in the job with the inspection will be charged for four hours of labour and the rocker cover gasket is costing £220 for the part, was told it was a specialty part that had to be ordered direct from ford hence the cost, according to them.

I feel like they're ripping me off completely, or am I wrong.

Cheers.

The quickest way of comparing prices is perhaps to have a look at eBay - I had a quick look and gaskets of that type started at £7 ish - however - Genuine parts from Ford are to my experience very much more expensive than pattern parts but are guaranteed.

If you have the job done by a Ford garage you will have the job done by a qualified technician (and not have to get your hands dirty) and will get a job guaranteed to have been done correctly. No further worries.

Another alternative is to go to a local trusted garage which will cost less, should have a guarantee, but may have not been done to-the-book.

Lastly there is do-it-yourself if you are confident. Cheap solution but no good if you aren't confident on the tools. Good luck.

i would say rip off

A genuine Ford gasket kit is £42 including the rocker cover gasket. The job should take 2 hours allowing time for coffee !!

Ford Dealer labour rates are about £120 per hour and independent garages vary around £80 per hour. So I'd expect to pay between £202 and £282 for the whole job including parts.

Are they quoting just for the gasket or is actually the rocker cover that is warped somehow and needs replacing? That could explain why they’ve said part needs specially ordering from Ford and the higher cost for the job

Exact wording on the invoice.....Oil leak, found oil all round front of engine, possible rocker cover is warped, requires replacement.
