Fuel Guage reading half but tank is empty

Featured Replies

I've been having problems with my fuel gauge it started a few months ago when my gauge showed my tank as a quarter full but it was actually empty. I have now  had the same problem while my gauge is showing just over half full but it is actually empty. I think it could be dirt in my tank or possible a problem with the float but I'm not entirely sure.

Would anyone be able to tell me what is causing this or how to fix it?

It could be a wiring fault or even a fault with the dash gauge.  Though it usually is a problem with the sender as you suggest.  Unfortunately you would need to remove the fuel tank in order to access the sender unit to check it.  At that point it is easy to test by plugging it back in and moving the float arm up & down manually to see if the reading changes.

Go into service mode in the cluster and perform a gauge sweep. see if that cures it.

If not Disconnect the battery for 10 minutes

Hello,

Had problem, gague showing right, but distance to empty DTE showing wrong. Like full tank, showing 300 km till 0.

Solved problem today with FORscan. Checked the fuel tank size in IPC module and set to 47 liters.

After that, changed fuel level source from PCM to IPC.

Now, showing 720 liters to 0 with full tank. Everything ok.

Here is the link step by step:
