Mk2 - Driveshaft Replacement - Leak

Featured Replies

Hi, I’ve replaced both my driveshafts on the IB5 gearbox I have with J&R driveshafts (brand new). But there is leak on the near side / LH (shorter driveshaft).

I noticed when it was parked in the wet and there was evidence of oil in the water / iridescent effect on the pavement

Could it be that diff oil seal is damaged and needs replacing? (Part number 1096999?)

Potentially I could have damaged this on removal / installation but I was careful not to touch / damage it.

I would say its  diff oil seal is damaged

Thanks @dezwez should I be replacing both sides?

No I would only do that side if it not broke don't fix it

I've done this so many times.  Was really common on the Peugeots that the diff seal would leak after a driveshaft out, no matter how careful I was.  Ended up replacing them all as a matter of course while the 'box was out for a clutch change.  It's such a pain to do when the 'box is back in again.

I agree with Del though, if the other one isn't showing any signs of weeping at all, I wouldn't replace it now.

OK thanks I shall get a picture uploaded when I get chance to better show the issue but I am pretty sure as you say it's the diff oil seal.

Is genuine the only reliable replacement for oil seals or can I look at aftermarket?

Hope it go's ok😊

Looks like i never followed up on this but it still leaks oil on the near side driveshaft.

Been reading that it could be a poorly manufactured driveshaft where the seal meets the machined surface it is scored and let’s oil pass.

Anyone had any similar issues and solutions?
