TPMS help please

Featured Replies

Hi all. I have a 65 plate focus and I keep getting the tpms warning come up on the dash. I’ve checked the pressures and they are fine, but when I reset the monitor it comes back on after about 10 miles, I took the car to a garage to see if one of the sensors has gone down but they said my wheels hasn’t got them. So any ideas as to why it keeps coming on ??

Interesting conclusion, how do they expect your TPMS works? I would seek a proper tire place like KwikFit, ATS etc to get it sorted...

He also had a launch diagnostic to pick up the sensors but it didn’t detect any. So have I basically got to buy 4 sensors and have them fitted. There’s not even a way of having the codes mapped out.

So, have just got the car and this has happened since you bought it, or has the TPMS worked in the past and just stopped working?

I’ve not long bought the car so don’t know the history of it tbh.

Now, that would have been useful to know in your 1st post 🤣

Whooops 😂

It may not have had any sensors.  Early Mk3's still used DDS.  That uses the ABS to measure wheel circumference and warn if a flat tyre is detected.

Could it be a ABS fault then ?  Would a reset work.

More likely to be a dodgy tyre.  Is one a different brand or model to the others?  If one of the sidewalls is softer than the others when warm it could be changing circumference enough to trigger DDS.

Unlikely to be an ABS fault unless you also had an ABS or ESP warning on the dash.

Or it's possible the car did have sensors originally, but the previous owner swapped tyres or even wheels, and then just put up with the warning.  Has it come on every time since buying or only after a week or more?

Yes it always comes on after about 10 miles or so. There’s no abs light or esp, and the code also can’t be mapped out as I’ve asked someone who does remapping.

DDS can just be switched on & off using FoCCCus and an ELM cable on Mk3, I've done it a few times.

If your did have proper TPMS with individual sensors though, that is more difficult to remove as it became a legal requirement.  Still not impossible if you can find the right person, not just an engine ECU mapper.

If it was trade sale then you should ask the seller to cover the cost.  If private then you probably will have to stump up the cost for the sensors yourself.

Can be done using forscan, did it on work mates c max 64 plate, I just switched the tpms to DDS instead. Still legal and MOT  compliant.
