oil in camshaft sensor plugs

Featured Replies

focus mk 4 2020 1ltr ecoboost petrol  45k miles noticed oil in camshaft sensor plugs was trying to remove one to see if chain or dreaded wet belt ,garage reckons chain accoding to service. looking online variable valve prob??

if so where is it fitted  where can i get one or something else wrong  thanks

Info taken down as I posted all wrong stuff - thought it was a Mondeo - sorry - Trevor B

Think you may have misread the engine type, Trevor.

Mk4 Focus 1.0 EcoBoost is chain for cams but still a wetbelt for the oil pump.  (And sadly not covered by catcar)

The cam sensors can pass oil themselves.  The VCT actuators are on the end of each cam, outside of the ally camchain cover on the chain driven 1.0.

Oh dear, many thanks for pointing that out Tom (my face has gone very red!)

Sincere apologies to Neil for wrong info - I read it as a MONDEO - sorry, ignore everything I said.

Yes.  The wiring will degrade with oil in it and cause problems in the future.

I seem to remember that there was a known problem with oil getting in to the wiring harness on an engine. I just can't remember which model and which engine. I even think there was a TSB issued to have part of the harness replaced when the vehicle was in for service.

Problem is that the FOC search engine is,,,,,,, shall we just say not very good !!!

Those aren't cam sensors.  They're VCT actuator solenoids.  (VCT = Variable Camshaft Timing).

There is oil acting directly on them all the time.  They control how much oil goes through to the cam variator using an electro-magnet.  The more high pressure oil that's allowed into the cam variator, the further the camshaft timing is advanced.

There are oil tight seals inside the the actuators to prevent the oil crossing over and reaching the electrical side, but they don't seem to be very effective on modern Fords.  The actuators are different on 1.0 and 2.0 EcoBoost yet both suffer with the same oil leakage problem.

The only fix is to replace the solenoid(s) and the affected sections of the wiring loom.

Hiya all, new member here, same issue as mentioned above. The replacement of the solenoids is described as a simple fix. I'm reasonably handy so would like to do myself. Does anyone know if there is a video guide on YouTube or somewhere to help? Or is it a case of undoing the 3 bolts, replacing and retightening to a torque spec? No oil draining, computer wizardry etc ( I do have a some code rest reader) Any expertise shared would be extremely helpful!!

Yes, it's literally that simple.
