Right I own a Focus 1.8TDCi Sport 56 reg and when the car is started up I've recently noticed a cloud of grey/white smoke coming from the exhaust. There is also the smell of the burnt diesel, but I expect that, but as for the smoke it's quite bad and continues for a while or so until I drive off. Also before driving off the car revs fluctuate a bit and it sounds like the car is going to stall. This even happens while driving off but only for a short period. I feel the 2 are linked but I'm a bit unsure.

it could be an injector dripping fuel overnight, then when you start the car the excess fuel emits as white smoke.

Cheers for the replies. I've done some research on the egr valve and it does look like thats the problem.

Where do I find the egr valve and is the Valve cleaner necassary? Does it do a good enough job?

You can't get the wynns egr cleaner from Halfords but any good car parts place, it's good stuff proberly not as good as taking it off and cleaning it but as I said it done wonders for my diesel, plus I don't have the time to take it off the spray only takes 10-15 mins to do.
