New Ford Explorer

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I went and test drove the new Ford Explorer at Peoples Ford Edinburgh over the weekend. The variant they had available to test drive was the 77 kwh Premium model (£48k roughly from memory). For those unaware the new Explorer shares its platform with the VW id4.

Inside the Explorer was a movable central screen, apparently due to Mach-E customer feedback. I have been told this will help reduce sun glare.

Exterior of the Explorer provides a chunky appearance and the boxy nature means that rear head room is pretty impressive - 5ft 11' me can fit behind myself in the car.

I have attached some photos below, the Artic Blue Explorer was the car that I drove and the red one was in the showroom. Main +'s on the road was the driving position, comfortable ride (especially over the uneven Edinburgh roads) and the boot space is a nice squared off shape.

What do you all think about the new Explorer?

Don't worry, we know.

I think it's awful

Is that a parking camera between the L & O on the front badge?  Completely ruins the smooth body line and character spacing if so.  Flip out Ford badge would've been a much better idea.

I quite like the colour of the red one.  Struggling to see anything else I like about it at the minute.  (I've never liked SUVs though, so not the target market)

Means nothing to me LOL I'm a Bhp guy! As for £48,000, well, if you have that kind of cash, why not! Though for that kind of dosh, would much prefer a used Porsche 997 Carrera 😁

You'd get a mint Capri 2.8 injection AND an RS2000 for that much.

Or a really nice X3 M40D😍

kWh is range, not power.  It's about 350 miles to a 'tank'.

Must admit I've never been keen on Porsches, despite generally being a VW guy.  For £50k I think I'd be buying an Aston Martin Vantage...  Though I suspect someone looking at SUVs probably needs a bit more practicality than any of the cars we've suggested so far.

Not a fan of any vehicle with a big tablet infotainment , EV or ice.

Me too. The government, correctly, has banned the use of Smartphone use in cars becasue they're distracting, and you need to take your eyes off the road to interact with them (apart from very rudimentary voice commands). Yet our very intelligent car designers think it's so clever to put most car functions on a touchscreen with multiple menus/sub menus which is impossible to use whilst car is in motion, and highly dangerous needing you to look at screen rather than what you're driving in to! They're a ridiculous invention for car use!

I try not to!😀

I'm not an SUV person anyway, however powered, but I do think it's better looking than the ID 4, for what it's worth.

Related to Stephen's points above, big mistake imo in carrying forward the "haptic touch pads" for steering wheel controls. VW have realised their error here and are replacing them on their own cars (e.g. Mk 8.5 Golf facelift) with real buttons. Maybe they offloaded the touch pads on Ford.

Looks like a cross between a house brick and a funeral hearse on steroids, can't wait to see one in black 😉
