New member + washer bottle problem solved

Featured Replies

Hi, I just joined as a new member but have owned 4 fiestas previously! Following the theft of my latest 2017 fiesta in April (car was taken from my work car park midday without the keys, in and away in 2 minutes as i found out when i got the cctv). Anyhow, i replaced the fiesta with a 2018 focus 1.0 ecoboost STline, which I’ve been happy with. I recently noticed that the washer fluid has stopped coming from the nozzles front and rear and with my MOT coming up thought i best get it sorted. Following a successful fix today i thought I’d share my experience as it may help someone in the future! After some digging online i found out that there is a filter on the washer bottle outlet to the pump which is prone to blocking, i could hear the motor running so this was a tell tale sign that there was a blockage. I jacked the front drivers side up, removed the wheel and arch lining, thankfully without breaking any clips.  This revealed the washer bottle and pump with the two lines running to the front and rear jets. The pump can be pulled from the bottle as is only held by friction and a push fit connection to the bottle outlet. Removing the pump revealed a rubber bung which has perforations to allow fluid through, this is where the problem was! The perforations were full of dirt/build up from stale water in the bottle. The bung can be removed and cleaned at which point i flushed out the bottle. It would have been nice to remove the bottle and give it a propper clean but one of the bolts holding it in place is impossible to access without taking the under tray of the front of the car. I managed to flush a lot of the debris out and reassembled everything. Now the windshield wash is working fine but i envisage that the perforated bung will block again in the future, not ideal but just a poor design from ford! I’d say its an easy enough diy fix to save on garage labour fee, its possible that next time i’d attempt it without taking the wheel off, just turn the wheels full lock. Hopefully this will be useful info for anyone having the same issue.
