Hi, I had a coolant over temperature message come up on my 2016 auto diesel. Drove for further 10 mins to get home and parked up with a slight burning smell from engine and coolant tank was empty ! Garage says I need to get a new thermostat housing complete unit. Been trying to find a cheap solution, should I go for genuine ford part or after market?  I saw genuine ford part for £200 and aftermarket £130. Also what's the likelihood I caused damage to engine after seeing the message ! I don't want to spend £100s of pounds to find out i have other issues I need to fix

    I take it it's the 2.0 diesel, not 1.5? 

    Part number 2264810.  There is an offer on the Ford ebay shop for 10% off currently.  So the genuine part is 'only' £180 there. Genuine Ford Focus Mondeo Galaxy S-Max Thermostat Housing 2.0 TDCi 2264810 | eBay

    There are some cheaper ones right down to £105 but I'm not sure it's worth the risk on quality if you're intending to keep the car for several more years.

     

    As for any other damage, there's no way of knowing until it can be filled with coolant again.  10 minutes with no coolant around the head could've easily blown the gasket or warped the head, but we just don't know right now.

    Yes 2.0 Diesel engine, thanks for the link i have ordered the genuine part. fingers crossed this is the only part that needs to be replaced !

    Looking back, i should have driven with the heater on full blast to minimize the heat on the engine.
