Are superchips safe?

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 68 plate 1L focus Ecoboost ST Line, what are the negatives of getting a superchip installed on my car?

Many thanks

Personally, having read about all the problems with the 1 litre Ecoboost, I would not try to tune it! I firmly believe in leaving cars standard, as from the factory.

I've no experience of these chips, but all most of them do is just alter the fuel pressure, so you might find yourself using more fuel.

I had one installed decades ago in my 1990 Escort RS Turbo. Most noticeable effect was that my rubbish MPG actually got worse 😂

I've had experience with superchips ( bluefin device and map) on 1.0 ecoboost focus MK3 ( wet belt engine ) and no I'll effects from it from 15k miles to 78k miles on cluster. Driving the same style gave exactly the same fuel consumption as the extra power is only from mapping the wide open throttle settings of the turbo, fueling ign timing etc. only time you use more fuel is when your using more throttle.

Then had one on the Mk5 Mondeo 2.0 tdci, same as above . No issues at all.

There were downsides on some folks fiestas where the  gearboxes couldn't cope with the power and damage occured.

Guess it partly depends if it’s a remap from Superchips or what someone is generically calling a ‘superchip’

Superchips claimed figures and power/torque curves are shown on their website and from people's experiences on here seem to be pretty accurate, so you can take a look and see if the improvements would be worth it for you.

Probably the main downside is that you then have a "modified" car for insurance purposes but how big an impact that has on premiums is down to the usual factors of age/experience/driving record, etc. I'm sure "Dan" from Adrian Flux will be along to offer assistance with that shortly!😀

I said earlier that when I had my Superchips fitted to my 1990 RS Turbo, the MPG was adversely effected. Thinking back, I'd be willing to concede that it encouraged more spirited driving which may have been an overriding factor in that! 😁 Oh, naughty me, of course I never informed my insurance company at the time, but in those days,  the main risk concern with a 'hot hatch', was that they were simply stolen on masse.
