Oil Consumption

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I own a Focus 2019 1.0L (125ps). I noticed that every 10.000km, the engine consumes about 300-400ml of engine oil (according to the dipstick). My car is being maintained as per Ford suggests but I change its oil once a year or at about 10.000-12.000km. Is that oil consumption normal? Are there any other factors that could cause increased oil consumption, other than engine issues? My driving is very normal and I never push he car in high revs. Thank in advance for your answers.

Hello,

What is the car's milleage?

I remember the manual saying the min-max on the dipstick corresponds to 1 litre. So, if you were to respect the 30.000 km interval, you would need to top up. If this is the case, then it sounds like it is consuming a bit too much. At least in my opinion.

No oil leaks anywere?

The maximum permissible oil consumption as listed in the workshop manual is 0.5 Litre per 1.000 KM.

0.3 to 0.4 Litre per 10.000 KM is way less than the maximum permissible oil consumption and is actually quite normal.

Now this I did not expect. 0.5 L per 1.000 km? How can that be permissible? If this is correct, then indeed 400ml / 10k km is nothing.

Is the workshop manual available somewhere? I mean the official Ford one, not some third party.

Shortly after the release of this offline Etis version Ford changed to a new online workshop manual and unfortunately I no longer have access to that system after I suspended my (paid) subscription.

Still the same Screenshot_20240918-202108.thumb.png.298bafe362c7449c7e62632cc9250e6b.png

I had in a transit custom not long ago that wasn't due service and put in 6 litres oil 😮😮 and what was left was probably diluted with diesel from regens.

So I went to Ford service for a scheduled oil change. I mentioned the oil consumption. They supposedly counted the oil and my car consumed 0,35L of oil in a course bit short of 10.000km. It is not considered a problem for Ford but they recommended an oil check at 5.000km. I don't know if i must take under consideration that we had an extremely hot summer and the car was always been driven in temperatures close and even over 40ºC for the whole summer.

IMHO Ford (and all other makers?) set, what "we" may consider, excessively high oil consumption limits because they don't want to be anywhere close to having to replace engines under warranty based on oil consumption?
To be fair, it depends on the "running in", now classed as unnecessary due to improved quality/machining/tolerances/synthetic oils/improved fuels and the exact conditions of rings/sealing etc?
Of course, if there's a leak, it should be covered until the warranty runs out but good luck on that one?

To be more fair, on oil consumption, I have been lucky and never had a problem for years (driving 54 years and had multiple serious failures of bodywork, engines and gearboxes in the early days plus 6 monthly oil and filter changes, "de-coking every 20k miles or so and adjusting ball joints most weekends!😉)

It is hard to say if the hot summer is an issue. You would need to know how hot the oil got, and of course there is a point where it might become so thin that it no longer performs as it should and maybe gets consumed. And even if you knew how hot it got, you would need to know at what temperature it is no longer performing properly.

So keeping an eye on it in the next 5000 km is probably the best you can do right now. It would be interesting if indeed the summer temperature was the cause.

Wilco do you know if this 2020 offline version is available anywhere to download? I would love to have a copy for references ect.

Thanks

The 2020 offline Ford Etis program (VMware virtual image) can be downloaded as a torrent from Rutracker.org.

Rutracker.org.

This is a Russian site - just saying.

It is every persons own decision whether they do or do not want to use products or services from Russian origin.

It is a well known fact that the old offline Ford Etis, Ecat and Microcat systems were last used in Russia while the rest of the world did already have the web based systems for Years. Because of this all of the more recent offline versions originated from Russia.

People who do not want to use Russian products or services should also not use Forscan, UCDS, FoCCCus, ELMconfig, ELM-FF2, etc.

I can only find up to 2016 on Rutracker.org, where is the 2020 version?
Also from reading the comments on the latest 2 entries, it doesn't really work after they moved to online, and you still need the dealership password?

The 2016 offline Ford Etis version could be updated to 2020. However some time after Etis was decommissioned entirely the update server also went down.

The 2020 version seems no longer present on Rutracker. It can however still be found under the Ford Focus 3 section on the Russian Ford forum (Ford vehicles owners club).

The offline Ford Etis software runs fine without any subscription or dealership password. I have been using it for Years. I recently created a Win 10 X86 Virtualbox image from scratch that contains the most recent versions of Etis, Microcat, VBFtool, wiring schematics and some other tools and programs. All is working perfectly.

I did manage to get the 2020 version working on the provided win7 virtual machine however i've tried looking up several cars before 2020 using VIN and none seemed to work, should they? Also when selecting vehicles using the dropdown menu instead of vin, there isn't really any information regarding the electrical modules and their corresponding software. Mostly hardware and installation procedures. Where is this info found if not in etis?

VIN lookup does not work on the offline Ford Etis versions. As far as I am aware this does not work since the program tries to connect to the online database which no longer exists since Etis was completely discontinued. The same applies for the TSB lookup.

The offline Etis does not contain any software or wiring information.

The wiring information (schematics) functionality was discontinued on the offline Etis versions 15 Years ago. Since that moment the schematics could only be accessed through the online Etis software which required a valid (paid) subscription. Since the online Etis software was discontinued the schematics can be obtained through the https://www.motorcraftservice.com/ website. This also requires a valid (paid) subscription.

Software information and programming functionality is a function of the offline Ford IDS / FJDS or online FDRS diagnostic systems. IDS / FDRS require an original VCM2 or VCM3 diagnostic interface and FJDS requires a J2534 compatible diagnostic interface. A valid (paid) subscription is required.

The workshop manuals are basically the only thing that is left of the offline Ford Etis system since most of the additional functionality was removed within the last 15 Years.

Alright thanks for the info. The reason i'm asking is i'm trying to find the 180hp equivalent map for my 150hp 1.5L ecoboost focus and i thought that would be the way to. I have found the VIN number of the exact same car with the 180hp map and i'm just trying to find the name of the files. https://www.motorcraftservice.com/ does provide a calibration .vbf file download by name so i should be good. Where do you find this info?

Ford discontinued the vehicle software information completely when Etis was discontinued. Since that moment there is no easy way anymore to identify which calibration files are programmed to a particular car.
