Just bought a kuga 2013 titanium AWD and it’s broke down

Featured Replies

Hello,

new to the group and just looking to see if anyone has had similar problem.
bought the car less than 2 weeks ago, private sale.
so it’s been playing up a bit last couple of days. It really revs(2-3000 rpm)and jolts between gears. Then today it just gave up and had no power in it. I broke down on a 60mph road with my two young kids in the back. I’m pretty *****. Anyway, says transmission fault on the dash.

Guy who sold it to me said it was fine when he sold it. I was told it was in for service the day before I went to look, and later found out gear box service/oil change not an actual service! Coincidence he had that done day before I bought it? Maybe.
anyway just wondering what the cost could possibly be to repair. If anyone had a similar problem. managed to get it home but it was a bit limp. Still doing that revving but felt a bit gutless.
thanks in advance!
really appreciate the help. I’m just anxious about costs as I spend pretty much all my savings on this car.

I think your only option is small claims court, as it will have been sold as seen and no warranty. If it has a warranty invoke it.

CA Consumer:

AND/OR

Try the tool and options as appropriate but if seller won't budge you may have to take things further  - try CA Consumer but Small Claim as ultimate with evidence:

However, suggest you get an idea of the problem from garage (if you can find anyone who actually has the skills!) but certainly get details of any codes

If you buy privately, you do so on the understanding that there is no warranty given or implied and therefore generally get a cheaper price. As per the saying "buyer beware" it is the buyers responsibility to satisfy themself that they are happy with the vehicle before the purchase. The buyer can pay for and get an RAC/AA inspection which offers a very limited warranty but not the same type of cover that you would get from a motor trader.

The lack of smooth changing of gears, and if there is a receipt for the gearbox oil change would highlight one of two issues :

1. The gearbox oil change was not completed correctly and the fluid level is too low OR

2. The seller was having issues and decided to have some work done on the gearbox.

There are 2 options as I see it, first is to take it back to the place where it was serviced and ask for their opinion and a re-look at the gearbox fluid levels. you may need to pay for this diagnostic time, but I would expect them to do it for free.

Depending on what they find, if the levels are correct, then your second option is to take things further through the small claims court, indicating that the fluid service was an attempt to mask a potentially expensive repair.

In many modern automatics the gearboxes are sealed for life, and do not require fluid top ups or a change. You might want to explore if this is the case for the Kuga, and build that into your Small Claims court submission.

Best of luck in your next steps.

Thanks so much for replying and for the advice everyone!
I’ve had a diagnosis and even more faults came up. Transmission error being one of them.
No local garage would touch it, only the gearbox specialist an hour away. And he quoted £2750 + VAT.
almost as much as I paid for the car.
he also told me that  the oil change was to mask the problem and they would 100% of been aware before they sold it to me.
I will never buy private again after this.

For anyone with no clue about cars like me, who may be searching for answers, I hope you find this and are made aware that apparently this is quite common in ford kugas of a certain age range.

If you can get the faults to disappear temporarily, like the previous owner did🤫, move the car on (WeBuy etc) ASAP

It could be a multitude of issues, power, wiring, transfer box or internal transmission wear/faults that could cost you an arm an a leg, even after the £2700

Get set up on FORScan

Fully charge the battery

Perform a transmission reset (you tube)

Clear all DTCs (FORScan)
