Ford Galaxy 2020 - Automatic Transmission Problem

Featured Replies

Hello!

We've recently bought an used 2020 Ford Galaxy 2.0 Titanium. I think it's not powershift, as it's not labeled anywhere, it has the dial type shifter knob.

The issue is that shifting is "jumpy", and when moving on constant speed, like 90km/h with tempomat rev jumps up and down in every 3-5 second like shifting up and down.

Anyone experienced similar issue?

Thanks in advance!

Ecoblues can suffer from injector issues, which could cause shifting issues

Also, I have read of dodgy torque converters on these lately, so get that checked out

Also, check the transmission fluid is at correct level

And ensure the main battery is fully charged

But it needs to go in for diagnosis

Thank you! Tomorrow it will go into service.

I understand the rest but main battery? Well i noticed that auto start stop is turned off because of "charging", but i can start the car without any problem even in cold. How is that related to shifting?

Autos need good power to run the pumps to shift properly.

Ford set the BMS to 85% whereas an auto box needs 95 to 100% to perform properly, you'll be suprised what issues low power can cause.

Once sorted, get yourself set up on FORScan ( @unofix will be along to advise😍) then fully charge your battery to 100% and, using FORScan, increase the battery charge rate in the BCM to 95%

Get Ford to check for and update all the software while it is in, especially PCM & TCM

FORScan. You need the windows laptop version if you want to make programming changes.

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

Well, quote from Ford is : Swap the whole transmission for 3 million huf ~ 7400 eur. 😆

Time to look for a company that repairs transmissions and get a quote from them.

Yes, but did they tell you why? What is actually wrong with it?

  • Author

Yes. They suspect the torque converter but they are unsure without full disassembly they suggest full transmission swap. But i bet its an issue that could be solved much cheaper. I think i have the 8F40.

Diagnostic shown no anomalies, when shifting gears the car jerks.

When moving with tempomat engine rev moves up and down. (I have video of this)

The guy at ford said, even thats not stated as a PowerShift transmission, it basically the same construction.

Wow, it basically isn't

If you're out of warranty, it will be best and more cost effective to source a replacement torque converter and get that fitted

Completely change the fluid too

Hi Haxiboy,

Did you manage to get this resolved without taking out a second Mortgage? I have the same problem with my 69 plate Galaxy with the same recommendation from Ford to replace the gearbox. Would be interested to know if you managed to get it fixed for a lot less please.

Hi, sorry for the Late reply. Not yet, but we are very close to resolving the problem. We'll swap the wandler first, as well as transmission fluid, and we'll see.

What is a wandler please (I must be missing the point 😉)?

Zwei Biere bitte is about it! (although we have German friends who deal with that stuff for us 😀)

I have a 69 Plate Galaxy Titanium X Diesel Auto with 8f40 gearbox. 9 months ago I started to notice a rumbling when shifting through lower gears, then hesitation in selecting lower gears, a lumpy gear change usually 30-45 mph. Is this likely to be torque converter going bad? Is there solenoids in the gearbox controlling gear change? Fords have had the car but can't diagnose the symptom. Is there a diagnostic system that could confirm torque converter failing as 3rd party warranty want definitive proof before allowing a claim for converter failure if it is that.

The only way to get proof of failure is to tear down I'm afraid.

Have you changed the fluid? How many miles has it done?

Thanks Dave, as far as I can tell the fluid hasn't been changed, and not something Ford suggested should need doing. The car has done 64000 miles and ran perfectly the first year I got it. Would you know if there are solenoids in the gearbox controlling gear change, or some sort of transmission system software, hoping that might be able to be diagnosed by a computer diagnostic? Ideally the symptom could be diagnosed to a degree the warranty people would say OK fix it, avoiding waiting for a catastrophic failure where the failure isn't in doubt.

At that mileage the first thing I would do is change the fluid, twice.

Your transmission requires ULV fluid

You only get 50% of the fluid out on these with a drain and refill, so change it, run it for a few miles to go through all the gears then change it again.

See if that improves it

Cool, many thanks Dave.
