Noise when pressing start

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 2020 mk4 focus 1.5 automatic st line.
I have randomly had a noise on a couple of starts over the last week. When I press the start button, I will get a single metal ring/ping noise. Car runs fine, no lights on etc. but has happened twice now and no idea what it is. Appears to come from under bonnet.

Just to start this off...
Single ping and no starter motor implies, to me,the starter solenoid is activating but the main motor doesn't kick in?
Check battery, main battery lead to starter, earth lead or starter itself but wouldn't expect starter after "only" 4 years although it is quite possible.
Otherwise, you'll have to explain the pinging thing better?

The car starts perfectly fine. It just makes this noise as it does. I think the pattern is around every 8-10 starts. The noise is really hard to describe - something like if you were to tap a spoon against something metal. Single ping.

If it is coming from under the Bonnet then it must be very loud for you to hear it inside the car with the doors and windows closed.

Open the Bonnet and get someone to start the car and you should be able to pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

I only heard it the first time because I had the window down talking to someone, since then because it’s made me quite anxious I have started the car with door open to see if I can hear it. I have tried this but because it does it intermittently it has been difficult as it hasn’t done it when I’ve had someone with me. And I dont  want to stop and start it repeatedly. I have booked it into the garage I bought it from as it is still in warranty for them to look at 😟

Hope you get a resolution under the warranty and please come back and tell us what the problem was (for anyone else in the future) Thanks

Hi there, does anyone have an update on this metal ping sound on start up. I have a 2020 focus, 1.5 ecoblue auto and mine has now started with this same noise and just trying to find out what it could be?

many thanks
