Stage 1 remap Fiesta Mk 7.5 ST-line

Featured Replies

A few days ago I treated myself to a stage 1 for my 17 plate Mk 7.5. as it only has 28,000 on the clock and runs like new.

After shopping around I opted for Remap Kings to carry it out.

Most companies who offer the service advertise almost identical BHP and Torque gains... 99 BHP > 140 BHP and around 115 > 240 ft/lb.

I knew Ford detuned the 99bhp Ecoboost from the standard 120ish so I just considered the remap a modest gain because I didn't think too much about the torque upgrade being an amateur.

Needless to say the performance upgrade is phenomenal, it has more torque than an ST and 25 more than a sierra cosworth.

Which brings me to my point.

Apparently the gearboxes and clutches on 7.5's struggled with even standard 140 Ecoboost fiestas, which have much less torque. Is that definitely correct? And not that Ford used substandard parts for a period of time or something.

Did Ford use the same 5 speed manual gearboxes for the whole mk7 and 7.5 production period?

Why is the whole remap industry confident that the car can comfortably deal with 240 ft/lb.

Even the UK's most reputable remap companies such as pumaspeed will do a stage two remap to squeeze even more power out of it and they only advise that the intercooler and air intake system need upgrading with no mention of gearboxes.

So for now I'm just going to drive it gently and economical because I'm worried about chewing my transmission up.

Except for an hour or two each week when the boy racer in me takes over  😉

Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter? Thanks 👍

The IB5 box was the same as used on n/a Fiestas and was afaik never originally intended to take the torque from a turbocharged engine. Not heard of the short term substandard parts story, it seems to have affected the whole production.

Probably because they want to sell remaps.😀 In fairness, Pumaspeed did mention gearbox issues in an article on their 200ps upgrade reported in Fast Ford magazine some years back.

As above, afaik, yes.

240 ft/lb.

NB according to their website, that figure is Nm not lb/ft, so about 180 lb/ft -  not quite so drastic.
