Head Gasket

Featured Replies

Hi All,

It has seemed my Ford focus 2012 head gasket has now gone, smoke started coming out the exhaust and no heating at all inside the car.

Any idea how much a new Head gasket could be supplied and fit?

Well...........

After holding a séance with Mystic Meg, we've been unable to see what country you're in, what currency you use and...... what engine your car has.

The best Meg could come up with was your in Japan and paying in Yen. She says you have a 2.9 litre 3 cylinder diesel, with a squeaky water pump !!

She thinks it will cost ¥11,000  but you might get a discount if you mention her name 🤣

Hi,

UK

1 litre eco boost.

So Meg was very close 😉

She often used to get next weeks lottery numbers 'spot on' give or take five or six wrong balls.

Has the wet timing belt already been replaced ? If not I'd cut your losses now and just change the engine.

I have had the car just over a year, I haven't changed nothing as there has been no issues with the car.

The timing belt hasn't been replaced as Far as i am aware, Changing the engine is more cost than getting the head gasket done.

All i asked for was a heads up on what a head gasket would cost to fit and supply, nothing about the engine?

The wet timing belt is way over due to be replaced on a 2012 car. The cost to replace the belt is currently £1800 at your local Ford dealer.

The cost to replace / fix the head gasket problem will be around £500 but on these engines you can expect complications.

Which is why I'm suggesting that it will be far more cost effective in the long run to replace the engine. They can be bought brand new and fitted from the likes of PumaSpeed for £3300

To be honest head gasket failure is actually quite rare on a 1.0 ECOboost.

In case of overheating these engines usually develop a crack in the cylinder head or even serious engine damage before the head gasket fails.

Apart from this there are very few successful stories of a head gasket replacement on these engines. In many cases additional (engine) damage is found after the cylinder head is removed and the engine turns out to be scrap.

To be able to remove the cylinder head the wetbelt between the crankshaft and the camshafts needs to be removed and replaced.

Best case scenario you are facing a full wetbelt change, sump cleaning, oil pump change, headgasket change and a cylinder head rebuild and skimming.

I did try to warn the OP, but they seem to think all they need is a new head gasket and all will be good.
