Orange plastic in oil gauze

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have managed to finally take my sump off and the findings were much worse than I was expecting. Even more concerning is in the oil strainer there is a piece of orange plastic. I’m now pretty concerned this is a sign of a bigger engine problem but unsure what this part is. Can anyone enlighten me?

Just a guess but it might be part of a valve stem oil seal.

Good call @unofix, I've changed a lot of them in my time but never seen a destroyed one.

There must be another Valve related problem for that to happen.

By the look of the oil pump strainer there could be quite a lot of problems.

This car was last seen on here about 5 years ago in connection with a turbo issue iirc?

Looks suspiciously like that. What would the repercussions of this be? What is that part called?

Aside from the wet belt degradation is there anything else you think is likely to be a problem? That’s right yeah the turbo went and was replaced.

Nothing much, just the 1.0 Ecoboost engine. Everything else should be fine 🙄

I don't think you mentioned in your other thread what prompted you to take the sump off? Very similar sounding case here, (it's not you is it?):

Plenty of related threads, such as this:

but there's likely to have been low oil pressure so wear on crank, bearings, possible oil starvation to turbo, damage to vacuum pump, looks like some top end issues if the valve stem seals are indeed breaking up.

Apart from the Engine probably being scrap, the Catalytic Converter is likely to be ruined or its life shortened a lot because of the Oil being burned due to the Valve Stem Oil Seal being broken.

Perhaps a lot more has happened to this engine than is known.

Heyo,

Quick google the other day when I was changing the wetbelt, found the same piece in the strainer.

This is part of the brake boost vacuum pump. Hope this helps! 🙂
