How is the plastic trim strip attached to the Mk2 door?

Featured Replies

I have been searching for a matching door for my Mk2 for a while. My car has a black plastic trim strip as shown on the door in the photo.

The door I have found has a strip that matches the body paint colour. As any door that matches the colour I need is hard to find, it is a case of having to use what I can get. This would require swapping the trim strip.

How is the strip attached to the door?

They are just stuck on with 3M double sided foam tape. To remove them use 'strong fishing line' or 'garden strimmer line' and slide it under one end and use a sawing motion to cut through the foam tape. Remove whats left with IPA (not the beer).

This is the tape that Ford use: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154316273023

Thanks for the quick reply.

The handle on the possible replacement door is also body coloured but has been scuffed.

If I do buy it, I am tempted to lightly sand them down and aerosol spray them both satin black still on the door. This is with the surrounding paint masked of course.

The other door also has a Ghia badge. Is that attached with similar foam?

The external handle is very easy to swap over, quicker than masking and painting it.

Yes you can paint them, but the texture will be different to the standard black handles fitted by Ford. They are quite easy to swap over if you have your own black handles.

The Ghia badge will also be stuck on with tape.

Thanks. The Ghia door also has an electric window regulator that would have to be changed to manual.

When swapping doors, it is super important that you change everything over from your old doors to the replacement. Pay special attention to changing over the door wiring harness and the door locking systems. Many people have failed to change these over only to find that once they closed the door it locked and could not be opened from either the inside or outside.

The place has offered me a lower price for just the bare door shell. This makes sense if swapping everything.

I have seen complete doors with identical trim but the wrong colour on ebay for as low as £20.

If I found one that cheap, I would buy it to strip the parts off to fit into the correct colour shell.

That way I would have a complete door ready to fit.
