FOCUS - screen wash problem

Featured Replies

Strange issue.

When trying to wash the front windscreen (pushing the washer stalk forwards) it is actually washing the rear screen.
When washing the rear screen (pulling the washer stalk towards you) it washes the rear screen as it should
So cannot get it to wash the front screen at all.

Any ideas where to start with fault finding ?
Thanks

In order of the most likely fault:

  1. Water ingress to the Body Control Module (BCM)
  2. Defective steering column washer stalk
  3. Screen wash pump non-return valve (in the pump)

When you operate the stalk, it sends the command signal to the BCM, which then sends power to the screen wash pump. For the front screen the BCM will send positive and negative power and the pump runs clockwise. Then for the rear screen the BCM will send negative and positive power and the pump runs anti-clockwise.

On very rare occasions the little non-return valve in the pump will stick and water gets forced out of one outlet only regardless of which way the pump is rotating, but I stress this is rare.

on mine, i have to press a button on the end of the stalk to wash the front window.

on my Escort Mk1 I had to use my left foot. Not quite sure if that will be of any help to the OP 🤣

Mk2 Focus screenwash button was very unintuitive.  One of the few improvements in the Mk3 was making the screenwash stalk like other cars, pull for front wash, push for rear wash.

On my Mk2, the following is how the wipers 'work'...

On pulling stalk towards you once, the rear wiper activates

Pull & hold a second time, and the rear wash works.

Flicking the stalk upwards once activates the front wiper a single time, flick it up to 2nd position, intermittent kicks in, flicking further up activates steady, and double speed.

Pushing the end of the stalk activates the front windscreen washer.

If front wipers are activated, and you go into reverse gear, rear wiper comes on automatically.
