Headlight Fault - MK3 Focus

Featured Replies

Hi All & Happy New Year,

So I've had my car about 4 months now, when I bought it the car had a headlight fault. When I scanned it with the Forscan phone app I got the error message that no level sensor signal was found. I did check the level sensors on the suspension & both were fine.

I messaged the seller & it turned out that he had put the incorrect headlights units when the previous ones broke (Halogens over Xenons). After speaking with him he bought correct second hand units & sent them out to me. These have been tested on another car prior to be sent to ensure they are working. The car is a 2011 1.6 TDCi Titanium X so I didn't expect him to go buy brand new units which would probably be most of the cars value.

I swapped the units over but still get the Headlight malfunction error come up after a few seconds of the car being on.

Error codes coming up when scanned are as follows:

B1A58 - Right Headlight Levelling Motor

Additional Fault Symptom:

Missing Message

B1A57 - Left Headlight Levelling Motor

Additional Fault Symptom:

Missing Message

B1C98 - Left Corner Lamp Circuit

Additional Fault Symptom:

Circuit Open

B1C99 - Right Corner Lamp Circuit

Additional Fault Symptom:

Circuit Open

Seems odd for both sides to have exact same faults, is there a way to reset the headlights? I don't have Forscan on computer but have ordered the cable & will install on a windows laptop I can get a shot of (I have Macbooks).

I'm fairly comfortable working on the mechanical side of cars but have minimal experience when it comes to electrics. I'm also brand new to dealing with Ford issues so don't really know where to start when troubleshooting.

Appreciate any help that can be offered.

Cheers

Try after you install forscan to delete the errors.

I have torque pro.

I would try to delete yhe error codes with this application and wait if the errors appear again.

When the wrong headlights were fitted, he must have changed setting in the BCM (and possibly other modules as well) in order to get the halogen lights to work.

You now need to use FORScan (Windows Laptop) to undo the changes and return all setting for the lights back to the factory default.

Personally I'd probably go for the option of using FORScan to download your cars "AsBuilt" data files from the Ford server and reload it to your car.

Thanks Unofix.

few follow up question on what I need to do.
Is it easy enough to do with zero FORScan experience?

where do you find the as built data? Is the Ford Server on FORScan or is it somewhere online? (Just reread your post & seen it’s on FORScan so ignore this)

I assume uploading the as built shouldn’t have any negative impacts on the car & other components? (Don’t believe anything else is different)

Thanks again

Should be simple enough to do. The FORScan programme will walk you through the steps.

When you are in the FORScan service mode, there is a small 'Tab' at the bottom of the page simply marked "AB" which is AsBuilt. Make sure that your laptop is fully charged and that it has a good internet connection.

Amazing thanks again.

hopefully I can manage it. Will return with an update (fingers crossed it’s good news)

Apologies for the slow update on this. Finally got a hold of a laptop to work on this.

so rewrote the BCMii module to as built. I tried to also just as built every module but a lot of them couldn’t find the as built data?

I then read & cleared the HCM module this removed 2 of the faults but the level sensor fault persists.

is there somewhere I could get a complete as built for my car so I can just return every module to factory (guaranteed)

any further advice would be greatly appreciated.
hopefully I’ve just missed something in the process.

cheers

Just to add to the above, I was scraping the car this morning & noticed the driver side DRL is not functional.

Hoping this wasn't something I done on Forscan as I'm 90% sure it was working before hand.

I seen a video last night of the wiring repair within the headlight, are these 3 cables at all possible to be the ones causing issues within the headlight?

Again any help appreciated.

Aditionally, if there are any Forscan gurus in the Aberdeen area please give me a shout as having someone who is experienced with it would be great.
