09 Focus front wipers default position problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My 09 Focus front wipers stopped working, so I replaced the fuse and they are back working. But they no longer default back to the bottom of the windscreen, but shut off half way across the windscreen which is obviously very annoying when just driving. Is there any way of resetting them so they live back at the bottom where they should?

Thanks.

The fuse will have blown for a reason. My guess would be that the self park switch inside of the motor has broken.

The easiest option is a replacement second hand wiper motor from eBay or a scrapyard

Thanks, but I've replaced the wiper fuse and the wipers are now both working fine. It's only when I switch the wipers off that they no longer return to the bottom of the windscreen but default back to half way across the windscreen. Anyone know how it decides where to default the wipers to?

Yes I know exactly how it knows.

As I said above, the self park switch that is inside of the wiper motor will be broken. You can't easily take the motor apart and repair the switch. The simple answer is to replace the motor assembly.

Thanks again. Whilst I'm happy putting in a 2nd hand motor, I'm still wondering if somehow I've got it set to the service position and can reset it back? I'm a long way off knowing, but I believe you can do this?

The wipers on the mk2 are very basic - they don’t have a service position like newer ‘smart motor’ systems can have.

You’ve got 2 speeds and a fixed park position that’s it.

Trying to remove and reset the wiper arms so they are at the bottom of the screen at park wouldn’t help either as they will crash into the leafscreen because the park position has been offset.

Don’t get to hear of that many fails with the mk2 wipers so shouldn’t be difficult to get a decent condition replacement motor assembly.

Thanks again. So before I set off on the road of buying and fitting a new assembly we're sure there isn't a way of resetting the park position on a MK2?

Oh wait a minute !!!

There is a reset for the park position on a Mk2, but only if is a 1.8, 2009 model and has to be owned by someone with a name beginning with an "L" 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Otherwise you have to replace the motor.

LOL. I'm in luck then. Hopefully when I reset it, it'll also fix the rusted roof, bashed in wing and timing issues.

So this is what I'm after?

Yes this will do nicely https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/116432935338

Thanks again. Looks like a bit of an ***** to do. If it's not wazzing down or snowing tomorrow, I'll do a test run of getting the blades and grill cover off.

If the motor alone is replaced how straight forward is it to align the motor shaft with the linkage so it’s all in sync when fitted to the car?

If that’s an issue then option to buy the motor and linkage assembly?

This one looks in decent condition

Says 2011 but it’s definitely the mk2 part going off the part number

Trick for getting the wiper arms off - undo the nuts then press down on the arms near where they’re hinged, on the side closest to the spindle. Helps loosen the arms as they’re on a tapered spline.

You’ll need to remove the plastic leafscreen then the metal panel below that. With the leafscreen there’s a strip it clips into that often comes off the lower edge of the windscreen at the same time. Poor design as it doesn’t grip the screen well and is often displaced as you try and clip the leafscreen back in.

Id search topics on here for some guides or try youtube

Example here, looks like only need the leafscreen off - video is bit fiddly to follow but you’ll get the main bits.
