Registering new TPMS

Featured Replies

Hi.

2018 ford kuga. Genuine new ford TPMS sensor. Does it need registering to the car using diagnostic software or do I just go to the tyre pressure options on the dash and select reset and go for a drive? The manual suggests that the car self learns new sensors?

Thanks

It varies, to be honest and there are a dozen different theories. From my experience when I changed all four wheels, the car could not read the new sensors and I bought a little programming widget for about £10 which sorted it all out in a couple of minutes. A little search will find one.

If it fails to relearn after a few miles then you will have to use the tool to relearn the sensor. The car needs to be put in to the programming mode, see information below. You need to do all 4 wheels using the EL-50449

So, as hoped the car learnt it's 2 new ford sensors.

Strangely though, the car thinks they are fitted to the front when actually they are the rear.

Is there a sensor in each wheel arch to receive the signal or is it just 1 unit that receives all the signals? If its 1 unit I guess the only way the car could possibly know which sensor is fitted to which wheel would be to perform the coding sequence as described above?

Earlier Mondeo based models did have a separate antenna in each wheel arch. But on a 2018 model I'm fairly sure the antenna is just built into the BCM so needs to be sync'd in the correct order.

Update to help other members.

Just used the tool and instructions above. Now, the correct sensor ID is showing at the correct location on the live data on my diagnostics reader.

So although the car can self learn genuine new ford sensors it has no way of knowing sensor location unless the training procedure is carried out.
