Wet Belt or Timing Chain

Featured Replies

Hi,

How can I find out for 100% sure whether my Ford Transit Custom has a wet belt or a timing chain?  It's a 2litre  and has adblue

It's a wet belt.

It's a 2.0 EcoBlue engine with a wet timing belt.

The service intervals for these have been drastically reduced by Ford for the Transit and now have to be done at 6 years of age.

if its front wheel drive after 2015 it is and should be changed at 100,000 ring and check if the is a recall on your year

It's down to 6 years now and I'll be doing mine at 5. The Oil pump belt is not changed automatically at the same time by some Ford dealers so you need to ask for that. It means a belt and a new sump on some engines.

When the belt fails it disintegrates, and initially small particles of the belt are sucked into the oil strainer on the oil pump as the strainer gets more clogged oil supply to the engine components such as main bearings big ends and camshafts is not sufficient causing damage to them through lack of oil quantity and / or pressure, further degeneration of the belt results in the rubber teeth separating from the belt and ending up in the strainer also with eventually catastrophic engine failure needing a replacement engine circ £9000 fitted, the earliest I have heard of these belts failing is 40,000 miles ish, and the engine oil used is very important, 9000 miles is the service interval I would change every 5000 miles or 6 months.

I loved my Transit 320 2.0td fitted with this "Panther" engine but sold it at 9 months old because I needed reliability and these engines are terrible; I bought a Vauxhall Vivaro 1.5 td sorry guys but it's a great van if not as nice inside as my transit was.

good luck everyone.

Doesn't the Vivaro use a rebranded 1.5 EcoBlue engine?  Hopefully yours is new enough for the 8mm chain if so.

There's a certain irony about this 😉

I could be wrong in fairness.  After all, I was about my own car!

I think you probably are right Tom. I've seen a fair number of ads for 1.5 Ecoblue engines which suggest it's aka Blue HDI and suitable for Peugeot/Citroen/Vauxhall vans.
